1298 Beware 'expert' travel agents selling 'connecting' flights!
Hi, just to warn anyone who wants to get to Southern Italian regional airports and are tempted to buy from travel agents who 'experts' in those regions...
I recently travelled to Lamezia airport with my two children, and was foolish enough to buy a package from a company that specialises in Calabria, including flights that 'connected' in Milan. Despite my questioning the short time for the transfer in Milan (45 mins..) was blithly assured by the agent it was ample time as ' it is just a case of walikng from one gate to another' Well, yes, a bus from the plane into the terminal, then through immigration & security into another terminal, and the farthest gate... Unsurprisingly we missed the connection, had a 6 1/2 wait till the next flight to Rome and then a further lightning dash to make another flight to Lamezia. ( Of course, the luggage didn't make it, poor kids were very tired).
The travel agent expressed surprise, and even disbelief, though logically you have to go thru immigration there, as the Lamezia flight is domestic.
Coming back thru Rome, same scenario, except that in that case the international terminal is as far away it could be from the domestic and included a monorail ride - so - another missed 'connection'
The agents clearly haven't a clue, despite their supposed 'expert knowledge', (the agent clained she had travelled that route - clearly she hadn't as she was unaware of the actual process - so be warned, ensure a lengthy period between connections, and pack your swinning trunks and toothbrush in your hand luggage!
I was sorry to hear about all the hassles you encountered.
If you book flights that do require a connection I would always recommend that you book directly with the airline concerned, they will only sell recognised routes where the connections are possible. These days it is easy to check everything out on their websites and it is generally a cheaper way as no agents commission and often a discount for booking via internet and having an 'e-ticket'.
Better luck next time!
