Navigating a website with lots of information is pretty tricky - and one of the things I really did not like about the previous forums is the fact that you could not simply say:
"I want all culture-related topics that refer to Sicily"
I've been trying to figure out what the best names (and categories they represent) for different roles within the community could be - and the information gathered from members registering so far has helped a lot to help me decide.Essentially - to
Those with avatars just all got a little green person - a bit of extra motivation to get your own personalised avatar! No, not really - just a way to keep everything spaced out neatly
Welcome to the ITALY Community site - here is some useful info on what you can do as a new member of the community.
Hello to all who have bravely found their way here - please fire away with questions about the website. It is all in a very rough state right now but we are working hard to polish everything and get a nice place for us to discuss.

so if they set up a "closed" group and don't want someone to partcipate then that is their choice. think of it as a free market scenario - few groups will be successful if they are closed - closed groups only really make sense if you really only want few people in them.at the same time - groups fall within community rules. so all the house rules that apply to individual posts apply to groupsbut again - as long as things are sensible, done in a generally positive spirit (rather than "let's us do a group so that we can discuss member x which we don't like ") things should be ok.
feel free to experiment!
Hi Chris - glad to have you here. Yes, the information from the old forums will remain in archive that everyone can search.
Hi Pam, the recent posts are right there whenever you are in the piazza - that is what we mean by "Community Activity". There is also a recent posts link under your account menu on the right hand side. That will give you an overview of everything going on.
it is very different from the usual forum layout - the main difference being that there are no forums as such! You create content which can be categorised and it is those categorise that replace the different forum headings we had in the previous layout. So as you say it is far more flexible from that point of view although it takes getting used to (especially if you are coming over from the previous layout and functionality)The other difference is between groups (where posts are visible only to group members) and posts in the public space (which are visible to all. Finally the piazza gives you an overview of everything going on on the website that is relevant to you (i.e. a view of all the public posts and group posts you are a member of)Another big different (that is not live yet) is the ability to create different types of content (rather than just posts like the forums). So tomorrow we will see how photo galleries, different types reviews, etc will be possible.
if you mean by Google only if you make them public (so that Google can get to them) - otherwise they will be index by our internal search engine.
HI - once you join a group the posts of that group are visible in the piazza for you but not for non-members. The piazza is a way to see everything relating to you that happens in the community (so also group posts). If you want to test it just join a group and then leave it you will see that you will loose the posts of the group you left from the front page.
will look into the links to other wikis - it may be possible. will get back to youregarding links to company and name - if you want to "brand" information then it can't really be a wiki (i.e. a collaborative effort). Wikis are meant to be documents where many people work on them so I am not sure how then saying "author website link" would work - perhaps "editor" in the sense that you co-ordinate the materialif you want to have material that is just yours you can do a post which would make it exclusively yours.hope this makes sense
you can click on create a post under the name of the group on the right - that would create a new post in this group. however, you could also just have the quiz in the public space (i.e. click on create post under public content). we could leave the group for planning initiatives - but things where people participate can be in the open space
hi annec - you can post - your request has been approved. perhaps you need to check the spam folder or there was some glitch and you didn't receive the approval message. but if you have a username and a password it means you are in. :-)
