When we travelled down to Liguria at the end of April, there were long queues at the Gotthard tunnel, which added 2 hours to our journey. We experienced the same last August.

Oh wow I remember watching ‘A place in the Sun’ but it was all about expats moving to Spain. We’re on the other side of Liguria, not as ‘posh’ but just as lovely I would love to see some pics of the house and area. We have friends who are looking but their preference is Tuscany…but you never know as this one is on the border….

Berlusconi's troubles
An Italian court has ordered Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's holding company Fininvest to pay 560m euros (£500m) in damages to a rival media group, CIR, over bribery allegations. The Milan appeals court's ruling was over Fininvest's winning control of publisher Mondadori from CIR in 1991. The takeover was sanctioned by a judge who was later sentenced for corruption. Mr Berlusconi's daughter Marina called the ruling an "act of aggression" by Italy's judiciary against her father. Fininvest had appealed against an earlier order to pay 750m euros in damages to CIR. That 2009 ruling found in favour of prosecutors who said Mr Berlusconi was "jointly responsible" for bribing the Rome judge. Bad week Mr Berlusconi said this week he was "certain that the appeals court of Milan cannot but annul the civil court judgment, which was absolutely unfounded and profoundly unjust". While there is no danger that Fininvest will be unable to pay the fine, the ruling caps a bad week for Mr Berlusconi, says the BBC's David Willey in Rome. The billionaire media tycoon tried to pass a law that would have delayed the penalty payment but there was such an outcry from his coalition government that he was forced to backtrack, adds our correspondent. The Mondadori case
The 74-year-old, Italy's longest-serving post-war prime minister, has appeared in court several times in recent months, accused of corruption and paying an underage prostitute. Amid the scrutiny, Mr Berlusconi said this week that he would not run for re-election, saying he wanted former justice minister Angelino Alfano to lead the centre-right into the 2013 election. Mr Berlusconi has frequently complained that he is being victimised by the judiciary. As well as being accused of attempting to bribe the judge in the Mondadori case, he has also been charged with embezzlement, tax fraud and false accounting. But he has always denied wrongdoing and has never been convicted. In 2009, Mr Berlusconi estimated that over 20 years he had made 2,500 court appearances in 106 trials, at a legal cost of 200m euros.
Hi Alma Wow the house sounds better by the day! Just need to win the Euro lottery now Click here for the second one The company is called Holprop
It sounds lovely. Good Luck. We found our property on the second link. It was advertised by an English lady on behalf of Italian friends. The links to the websites I posted are not very clear or obvious. I hope you found them. You need to point the cursor at my words and then click. Strange layout.
That’s very kind and thoughtful of you to help her Alma. I know of so many people that have bought property via via. In ‘our’ small mountain village it seems that this is the only way that property is bought and sold. When we were there in Many/June, we happened to mention to a local that we were considering a bigger property and by the end of the day, we had a choice of five properties to view. There were no ‘for sale’ signs up so we would never have known. You could try here or this one There is small fee to pay to advertise the property. Where in Liguria is the property?
Alan...you're probably right! Someone has to pay for the improvements to the Gotthard tunnel and according to the politicians, it should be the end user. The Swiss/German couple have family members who are involved in local politics so it seems they are far more in the know than us mere mortals. Using the French motorways costs more than double the price of a Swiss vignette and that’s the argument apparently. I guess it’s a case of watch this space…
We met a Swiss/German couple when we were ‘in residence’ last month. They told us that the proposed cost of the vignette from 2013 will be between 120-160 Swiss Franc The good news is that the Swiss government still have to approve this. Apparently there will be various options and concessions but these are also still unclear.
Police have clashed with demonstrators in the Italian Alps over the construction of a new high-speed rail link with France. Tunnelling is set to start for a line from Turin to Lyon, which is expected to cut the travel time by nearly half. Local residents built barricades to prevent heavy machinery from starting work in the picturesque Val di Susa, in northern Italy. Police used fire hoses and tear gas to disperse them. The Italian government is determined to go ahead with the project, which is heavily backed by EU money, and has ordered work to go ahead despite environmental objections. Police had to escort the contractor's bulldozers to the high alpine site where work is due to begin. Demonstrators set on fire barricades erected to keep out intruders, but failed to halt the works. Earlier more than 3,000 people took part in a peaceful, candlelight prayer vigil through the night against the project. They fear that, despite safeguards built into the multi-billion euro project, an area of outstanding natural beauty is going to be spoilt. CLICK HERE FOR VIDEO CLIP
I love my Kindle! It took me awhile to decide as I love the feel and smell of book but it certainly is one of my best purchases. I can’t imagine being without it now. I live in The Netherlands and bought it from the Amazon UK using my Dutch credit card. I had it delivered to my daughter’s address in London. I registered it to buy from Amazon UK because the prices of books from Amazon.com are almost double! I’ve taken it to Spain, Italy, UK, Sweden and downloaded newspapers, logged on to BBC website and other websites with no problem. I would certainly recommend registering it to the UK.
