Ciao. We seek winter accommodation in Calabria, or possibly Sicily. Initially, would like to spend a few weeks there from late November. Just to get a feel for things there at that time of year.
Hi, am new to the page, though have been following Italy magazine for some time. We visited Calabria this summer, and would like to purchase a small apartment or house there.
Thanks for those insights, Steve. The car situation in the EU is a pain, and although we have solved the issue in Germany, we don’t really want to drive to Calabria. Am wondering if a pellet oven is a must in the winter. Suspect that might be challenging to find as well.
Hi John,Thank you for the info. I have to start researching Platania as well. Great to hear your enthusiasm.Thank you for offering to answer any questions. Am sure there will be many.
Thank you for your comment and thoughts, Steve. We are presently dealing with all those issues, having recently returned to Germany, and having purchased a house. I really struggle with Northern winters these days so a few months in a warmer, lighter climate would be a bonus. But the lack of home comforts is certainly something that concerns me. A friend has purchased two holiday properties in Italy and has had some issues to deal with and thinks rental is not a bad option. But it all comes down to the property itself and the location, perhaps.
Sounds like fun. Freak weather can happen anywhere, I guess. Presume you were further north? We are no longer committed to particular travel dates. Hope the insurance would pick up the tab for snow delays.
That's really helpful, Steve. I can imagine that it varies and am sure heating is essential In winter. One to two hours more daylight in winter? Great. That is reassuring. Yes, we noticed the shorter summer days, but with warm evenings, who cares? I have a friend with property in Tuscany and Calabria. She very much prefers things in Calabria, but has never spent winter in Italy. We are at an age where we need to commit asap, so picking and choosing isn't an option. It's a case of now or never. We are holidaying there Dec/ Jan so will see what the heavens throw at us. Fingers crossed.
Thank you for this helpful info, Modicasa. Am now following weather reports of Reggio Di Calabria and Sicily to see if they are always similar. At present this seems to be the case. I can deal with a month! :)
Ok thanks again, bunterboy, and to your wife. It's about escape from Atlantic gales and dark days and having a liking for the culture and lifestyle. Not a sun worshipper, as in stripping off on the beach.
