Has everybody got their decorations up?  I'm feeling guilty!

Two nights ago a gecko appeared in my lounge. It stayed high up on the wall and I couldn't reach it even if I were brave enough to handle it.  Yes, I know they are quite sweet, eat mosquitoes, etc and it only scares me when it moves!

Hope you are all having a great ferragosto.  What's everybody doing? I'm having a quiet day at home with my dog.

I live in a city centre, second floor apartment so I don't get much bother from creepy-crawlies, which is just as well, as I'm a city lady who is terrified of them.

I thought it would be fun to find out what everyone is reading at the moment.  I'm reading "Julie and Julia" in English and a bio of Rita Levi Montalcini in Italian.

Nothing but bills coming through the letterbox down here in Sicily.  How about where you are?

Thanks for that.  Simi the dog sends wags and empathy to Harry.  There's definitely something out there that wasn't there before!  Everybody down here seems to have a second bout of a dry cough and everyone agrees it's an allergen.

Hi, hiller and welcome. I am hopeless at finance so can only empathise.  My own gas bills are always sky high. Do you have an Enel office near you? I think it would be much easier to sort out if you could go and see them . I think they want to be helpful, Pat

Gosh, I started something there! I don't own property so don't get an ICI bill but I sure get everything else! There's only me and Simi the dog but my gas bills are sky high.  I'm sorry for all of you with these enormous bills but I do feel less alone now!

For cakes, I find "farina per torte" best. You can find it in any supermarket.  It is plain.  I have sometimes seen self-raising flour in the Di Meglio chain but not for a while. Funnily enough, though, yesterday they had a new line - "farina per torte con lievito". I got some but haven't used it yet.  Sometimes you can find baking powder in Di Meglio supermarkets, too.  In ours it wasn't with the cake stuff but with the Uncle Ben's rice!  Failing baking powder, just add the contents of a sachet of "lievito ", which you can get vanilla-flavoured or not , to your flour.  Hope this helps. Simi's face much better, thanks. Yes, do keep investigating and let us know any results.  It is all so strange.  Cuddles for Tom.

Hello and welcome. I'm sure you'll make friends and get lots of advice here.  I moved to Sicily with my dog 5 years ago and the best advice I can give you is to get as much information as you can from several different sources.  This may seem confusing at first but sometimes what we read on websites isn't up to date info or doesn't apply in our particular circumstances.  Also the Itals are great ones for changing rules and regulations all the time!  Don't let this put you off - just get well informed and go for that dream! Please don't hesitate to contact me if you think I can help.

Hi, Zuzana and welcome.  As you have a TEFL qualification the language schools should be queueing up to get you! I suggest you do your CV to the European format, if you haven't already done so, and start taking it around to your local schools.  Good luck!
