9 'White Cities' Not to Miss in Italy

Piazza dell'Arengo in Ascoli Piceno (Marche). The city was mostly built using travertine.

Atrani (Amalfi Coast). The white of the buildings, alleys, arches and stairways give this tiny village a magical atmosphere.

View of Matera (Basilicata), the city of 'Sassi', carved out of white limestone rock.

Ostuni (Puglia). The entire city center is covered with white lime reflecting in the bright sunshine.

Ceglie Messapica (Puglia). The use of white lime had the main goal of lighting up the village's narrow alleys.

Cisternino (Puglia). A maze of alleys where white buildings, green doorways and shutters, and flowers have made this village a contender for Italy's most beautiful 'borghi'.

Martina Franca (Puglia). The radiant white of the streets and houses is perfectly integrated with the Baroque style of the palaces (pictured here is the Basilica of San Martino).

Siracusa (Sicily). The alternation between the white of the buildings, from the 'giuggiulena' stone, and the blue of the sea and sky is especially fascinating (pictured here is the Cathedral).

Levanzo (Aegadian islands, Sicily). The white of the houses and the blue of the sea are intertwined in perfect harmony on this pearl of the Thyrrenian sea.
Check out some of Italy's dazzling città bianche, where the prevailing color of buildings is white. Mostly located in the south and especially Puglia, these 'white cities', with their picturesque houses, beautiful monuments and tiny streets, will be sure to charm you.
