“The Descent of the Candlesticks”: Sardinia’s Most Beloved Summer Festival

Every year, on the night before Ferragosto, the city of Sassari hosts Sardinia’s most important summer festival: the Descent of the Candlesticks.
The name alone inspires curiosity – what is this all about? The Descent of the Candlesticks is a deeply felt religious procession which attracts people from all over Sardinia, and even from outside the region.
The festival seems to stem from a vow made in 1652 to the Virgin Mary, who saved the city from the plague, although its origins date to even earlier, inspired by a similar festival held in the Republic of Pisa, which ruled Sassari in the Middle Ages and brought to the city, along with its chief magistrates, the tradition of honoring the Virgin Mary every mid-August with a wax offer in the form of large candles.
The Descent of the Candlesticks consists of a dancing procession where the ‘candlesticks’, now large wooden obelisks adorned with colorful silk ribbons, flowers and veils, are carried on the shoulders of volunteers across town, from Piazza Castello to the church of Santa Maria di Betlem.
Sassari’s Descent of the Candlesticks was added in 2013 to UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as notable for its "celebrations of big shoulder-borne processional structures."
It is ‘la festha manna’, the ‘big party’ of the Sassaresi, the local people.
Ogni anno, nella notte precedente il Ferragosto, la città di Sassari ospita il più importante festival estivo della Sardegna: la Discesa dei Candelieri.
Già il nome ispira curiosità – di che cosa si tratta? La Discesa dei Candelieri è una processione religiosa profondamente sentita che attira persone da tutta la Sardegna, e anche da fuori i confini regionali.
La festa sembra derivare da un voto fatto nel 1652 alla Madonna, che salvò la città dalla peste, anche se le sue origini risalgono a prima ancora, ispirate da una festa della Repubblica di Pisa, che nel Medioevo governava Sassari e nella città sarda portò, oltre ai suoi podestà, anche la tradizione di onorare la Vergine Maria alla metà di agosto di ogni anno con un'offerta in cera sotto forma di grandi candele.
La Discesa dei Candelieri consiste in una processione danzante durante la quale i "candelieri", grandi obelischi di legno, decorati con nastri di seta colorati, fiori e veli, sono trasportati sulle spalle di volontari attraverso la città, da Piazza Castello alla chiesa di Santa Maria di Betlem.
La Discesa dei Candelieri di Sassari è stata inserita nel 2013 dall’UNESCO nel Patrimonio orale e immateriale dell'umanità, degna di nota nell’ambito della tradizione delle “grandi strutture processionali a spalla”.
E’ davvero la “Festha manna”, la “festa grande” dei Sassaresi.
