No-frills airlines, special offers and cheaper fares are increasingly making their mark on the travel industry and are not only a good thing but above all a love thing when it comes to long-distance relationships. When I explain to people that I have an Italian boyfriend who lives in Italy, most people think it must be a summer romance that won’t last. When I mention that we met four years ago when I was studying at an Italian university, they are a bit taken aback.
Even more so when I tell them that he still lives in Italy, while I live in London. But when they ask how often we see each other and I say ‘at least once a month’, they begin to look less concerned about the state of my mind and more interested in where he comes from and how we met.
But the success of long-distance love these days is not just down to advances in communications in recent years, such as the internet and incredibly cheap telephone calls. The huge number of cheap flights on offer has opened the doors to a whole new dating game for both young and old, and low-cost budget airlines like Ryanair, Easyjet and even the more established British Airways and Alitalia, have played a major part in this. Ryanair were named ‘most popular airline’ by Google.
Great deals for all
With all these airlines offering special deals to centrally located air-ports, Cupid is able to work his magic all over Europe. An enormous number of Brits, as well as Italians, Germans and Spaniards, take advantage of these cheap deals every year, snapping up flights for sometimes as little as a penny, enabling them to see more sunshine or snow than they could have done in the past. ‘Just taking a city break’ and ‘Off skiing for the weekend’ are no longer words restricted to the affluent, and more often than not childless, upper middle classes, but now families and students alike can enjoy cheap and cheerful week-ends in cities like Rome and Paris or on the slopes in the Italian Dolomites or French Alps.
However, while cheaper flights are a relatively new phenomenon, long-distance love is not: summer romances and holiday flings have been going on for generations. But relationships that often went sour after the initial flow of enthusiastic love letters seem to be a thing of the past, and in their place is a more functional and cross-continental type of relationship.
Best of both worlds
For a young professional not long out of University like me, this new type of ‘long-distance relationship’ has many advantages and enables me to be with the man I love whilst at the same time not having to sacrifice my job or getting into any real financial difficulty. In fact, a cheap flight to Italy for the weekend often costs less than a meal for two at a restaurant in central London, or indeed a return day trip to Bath or Manchester on the train.
After doing some research, I have discovered that long-distance relationships are on the increase – many of my friends who were lucky enough to study and work abroad are not having to sacrifice their newly-found jobs or boyfriends but can continue to let their relationships blossom without making the drastic move abroad all too soon.
Of course, there will inevitably come a point when the flying will all get too much and I will have to decide where to live, Italy or England? But with the weather and food on their side, not to mention the handbags and shoes, it could be an easy choice.
Whatever the outcome of these new models of relationship, one thing is for sure: the airlines are forging an ever closer union in Europe and perhaps even giving Cilla Black a run for her money – who knows how many newly-formed bilingual families will come about as a result?

cosa ma soprattutto una questione d’amore quando si tratta di relazioni a lunga distanza.
Quando spiego alle persone che ho un fidanzato italiano che vive in Italia, la maggior parte di loro pensa che deve essere un amore estivo che non durerà. Quando dico che ci siamo incontrati quattro anni fa quando stavo studiando in una università italiana, queste persone sono molto sorprese. E lo sono tanto più quando gli dico che lui vive ancora in Italia, mentre io a Londra. Ma quando mi chiedono quanto spesso ci vediamo e io rispondo ‘almeno una volta al mese’, incominciano ad essere meno preoccupati circa lo stato della mia mente e più interessati a sapere da dove viene e come ci siamo incontrati.
Ma il successo dell’amore a lunga distanza in questi giorni non è solo nel progresso dei mezzi di comunicazione degli anni recenti, come internet e le telefonate incredibilmente a buon mercato. I molti collegamenti aerei a basso costo a disposizione hanno aperto le porte a un intero nuovo gioco di appuntamenti sia per giovani che per meno giovani, e le compagnie a basso costo come Ryanair, Easyjet e persino le grandi British Airways e Alitalia, hanno giocato un importante ruolo in tutto ciò. Ryanair è stata nominata ‘la compagnia più popolare’ da Google.
Occasioni per tutti
Con tutte queste compagnie che offrono occasioni speciali su aeroporti importanti, Cupido è in grado di spargere il suo amore in tutta Europa. Molti britannici, come gli italiani, i tedeschi e gli spagnoli, colgono queste occasioni ogni anno, accaparrandosi voli a volte per un solo centesimo di Sterlina, mettendosi nella condizione di godere più sole o neve di quanto avrebbero potuto fare in passato. ‘Staccare la spina’ e ‘vado a sciare nel finesettimana’ non sono più parole per soli ricchi, e spesso per persone senza bambini, o appartenenti alle classi agiate, ma adesso sia le famiglie che gli studenti possono passare finesettimana piacevoli ed economici in città come Roma e Parigio le discese delle Dolomiti italiane o delle Alpi francesi.
Tuttavia, mentre voli economici sono un fenomeno relativamente nuovo, l’amore a lunga distanza non lo è: gli amori estivi e le cotte da vacanza sono esistite per generazioni. Ma relazioni che spesso andavano in frantumi dopo l’iniziale flusso di entusiaste lettere d’amore sembrano essere una cosa del passato, e al loro posto c’è un tipo di relazione più funzionale e ultra continentale.
Il meglio da entrambi i mondi
Per una giovane professionista non da molto tempo fuori dall'università come me, questo nuovo tipo di ‘relazione a distanza’ ha molti vantaggi e mi permette di essere con l’uomo che amo e allo stesso tempo di non dovere sacrificare il mio lavoro o di cacciarmi in problemi finanziari. Infatti, un volo economico verso l’Italia nel finesettimana spesso costa meno di un pasto per due in un ristorante al centro di Londra, o meno di un viaggio andata e ritorno con il treno a Bath o Manchester.
Dopo aver fatto un po’ di ricerche, ho scoperto che le relazioni a lunga distanza sono in crescita – molti dei miei amici che sono stati abbastanza fortunati di studiare e lavorare all’estero non devono così sacrificare i loro lavori da poco trovati o i propri fidanzati ma possono continuare a far fiorire le proprie relazioni senza doversi drasticamente trasferire all’estero troppo presto.
Certamente, verrà un momento in cui mi stancherò di volare così tanto e deciderò dove vivere, in Italia o Inghilterra? Ma con il tempo e il cibo a loro favore, per non parlare delle borse e delle belle scarpe, probabilmente sarà una scelta facile.
Qualunque sia il risultato di questi nuovi modelli di relazione, una cosa è certa: le compagnie aeree stanno forgiando una unione ancora più stretta in Europa e forse pensando a Cilla Black! chissà quante nuove famiglie bilingue si creeranno come risultato?
