Ossana: The Mountain Village with More Nativity Scenes than Residents

It’s (almost) that time of the year again: Natale! And Christmas in Italy means nativity scenes on display in every city and town. One small mountain village in the northern region of Trentino, Ossana, is celebrating a record 890 representations of the nativity scene (presepe in Italian) scattered around its streets, more than the number of its residents, 852.
In a way, it’s always Christmas time in Ossana: residents work all year round to prepare for the annual ‘presepe’ event taking place from the beginning of December to the beginning of January (this year December 1, 2017-January 7, 2018); they build, sew, patch, and arrange characters, clothes, buildings and animals that will form part of their strictly artisanal nativity scenes.
The number of nativity scenes has skyrocketed this year thanks to the donation of a private collection of presepi (760) by a recently deceased man from Veneto who indicated in his last will that his nativity scenes should continue existing in this village in Trentino’s Val di Sole (Sun Valley) he loved so much. They will be on display in the Casa degli Affreschi building, while outside, in the streets of Ossana, there will be many others, some of life-size dimensions. Every Saturday in December, a living nativity scene will be staged in the Church of San Vigilio.
Ossana, like many mountain villages in Trentino-Alto Adige, will also host Christmas markets, two to be precise, one in the main piazza, and the other in the 12th century Castle of San Michele. This is your chance to taste the region’s delicacies and stock up on local artisanal objects and decorations: no Made in China trinkets as per municipal directive; the idea is in fact to highlight the craftsmanship of the local artisans who keep a beloved tradition alive.
Ossana is 40 kilometers from Trento, Trentino’s capital, which is well connected by train, and near the mountain village of Madonna di Campiglio, a popular winter destination.
Ci si avvicina al periodo natalizio, e il Natale in Italia significa presepi in mostra in ogni città e paese. Quest’anno, un paesino del Trentino, Ossana, celebra un record: 890 rappresentazioni della Natività saranno allestite per le sue strade, più del numero dei suoi abitanti, 852.
In un certo senso, è sempre Natale a Ossana: i residenti infatti lavorano tutto l'anno per preparare questo evento dedicato al presepe che si svolge ogni anno dall'inizio di dicembre all'inizio di gennaio (quest'anno, dal 1 dicembre 2017 al 7 gennaio 2018) ; costruiscono, cuciono, tessono e sistemano personaggi, vestiti, case e animali che faranno parte dei loro presepi rigorosamente artigianali.
Il numero di presepi è cresciuto di molto quest'anno grazie alla donazione di una collezione privata di 760 presepi da parte di un uomo veneto recentemente scomparso che aveva indicato nel testamento di voler donare i suoi presepi a questo paese della Val di Sole che amava così tanto. Saranno esposti nella Casa degli Affreschi, mentre all’esterno, per le strade di Ossana, ve ne saranno molti altri, alcuni a grandezza naturale. Ogni sabato di dicembre, un presepe vivente sarà allestito nella chiesa di San Vigilio.
Ossana, come molti paesi montani del Trentino-Alto Adige, ospiterà anche i mercatini di Natale, due per la precisione, uno nella piazza principale e l'altro nel Castello di San Michele risalente al XII° secolo. Qui si potranno assaggiare le prelibatezze della regione e fare scorta di oggetti e decorazioni artigianali locali: niente paccottiglia Made in China come da direttiva comunale; l'idea è infatti quella di sottolineare la qualità dei prodotti creati dagli artigiani locali che mantengono viva una tradizione amata.
Ossana si trova a 40 chilometri da Trento, il capoluogo del Trentino, ben collegata con il treno, e vicino a Madonna di Campiglio, una famosa destinazione invernale.
