Siena’s Piazza del Campo Is One of Europe’s Greatest Medieval Squares

Piazza del Campo, or simply the Campo, is Siena’s main square. With its unique shell shape and architectural integrity, it’s considered one of Europe’s greatest medieval squares and has become the symbol of this Tuscan city. Piazza del Campo is also the location for the thrilling Palio di Siena, which takes place twice a year.
The space that would become the current square was originally a reclaimed land that allowed the outflow of rainwater. The core of the emerging city was higher up, in the area of Castelvecchio, and the future ‘Campo’ was a space for markets.
The history of the square is strongly intertwined with the construction of the Palazzo Comunale, which overlooks it, and was built to house the residence of the podestà (chief magistrate) and the offices of the magistrates.
The first document describing a new arrangement of the space in the Campo dates back to 1169, but it wasn’t until the beginning of the 14th century that the existing buildings began being restructured and expanded.
From the piazza, 11 narrow streets radiate into the city. It is still the center of the city’s public and civic life.
Piazza del Campo is also famous because it hosts the Palio delle Contrade twice a year, on 2 July and 16 August. This unique horse race sees the 17 historic districts that make up Siena fiercely compete. The race consists of three laps around the track that surrounds the square, paved with slabs of pietra serena, which is sprinkled with a layer of tufa dust to allow the horses to run; that does not prevent them from incredible slips, especially when running around the curves.

Con la sua originale forma a conchiglia ed integrità architettonica, è considerata una delle più belle piazze medievali d'Europa ed è diventata il simbolo di questa città toscana. Piazza del Campo è anche il luogo dove si svolge l'emozionante Palio di Siena, due volte l'anno.
Lo spazio che sarebbe diventato l'attuale piazza era in origine una terra bonificata che consentiva il deflusso delle acque piovane. Il nucleo della città nascente si trovava più in alto, nella zona di Castelvecchio, e il futuro 'Campo' era uno spazio per i mercati.
La storia della piazza è fortemente intrecciata alla costruzione del Palazzo Comunale, che sulla piazza si affaccia; fu costruito per ospitare la residenza del podestà e gli uffici dei magistrati.
Il primo documento che documenta una nuova sistemazione degli spazi del Campo risale al 1169, ma fu solo all'inizio del XIV secolo che gli edifici esistenti iniziarono a essere ristrutturati e ampliati.
Dalla piazza, 11 strade strette si irradiano nella città. La piazza è ancora il centro della vita pubblica e civica.
Piazza del Campo è famosa anche perché ospita il Palio delle Contrade due volte l'anno, il 2 luglio e il 16 agosto. Questa eccezionale corsa di cavalli vede sfidarsi i 17 distretti storici che compongono Siena. La gara consiste in tre giri attorno alla pista che circonda la piazza, lastricata con pietra serena, che viene cosparsa di uno strato di polvere di tufo per permettere ai cavalli di correre; ciò non impedisce loro di scivolare, specialmente all’altezza delle curve.
