Escape the Roman Heat at These Five Beaches near Rome

An hour north of Rome, Santa Marinella has been a popular beach resort since Roman times. Actress Ingrid Bergman and director Roberto Rossellini had a villa here.

Once a maritime town of ancient Etruria, Fregene is the Romans’ favorite beach, 25 km from the capital, especially popular for its nightlife. Aperitivo on the beach, anyone?

Located about an hour south of Rome, Anzio is known for its picturesque harbor and for being the site of the Allies landing during World War II. It is also a departure point for ferries to the Pontine Islands.

More secluded than other Rome beaches, Sabaudia is harder to get to (it requires train + bus, an hour and 20 minutes), but boasts a beautiful Blue Flag beach with clear waters and views of the promontory of Circeo.

Another favorite since Roman times, Sperlonga is farther away from Rome (an hour and a half), but worth the trip for the whitewashed town perched on a cliff, clean waters and the archeological museum on the grounds of the former Villa of Tiberius.
If you visit Rome this summer and find yourself in need of a break from the city’s oppressive heat, head to the beach. Italy’s capital isn’t too far from the coast and you can easily reach a number of beaches by public transportation for a refreshing dip into the sea.
