When the small island of Pantelleria was ready to inaugurate a new church, the bishop knew just what to wear- Armani.
Giorgio Armani has holidayed in Pantelleria, a Mediterranean island off the coast of Tunisia, for nearly 40 years. He was even made an honorary citizen by its inhabitants in 2006.
In order to show his love for the island and to help celebrate the opening of the new church, the designer created custom liturgical robes for the bishop of Mazzara del Vallo.
The robes are a tribute to the beautiful Sicilian island. The light green vestments are covered in starfish, shells and other embroidered symbols of the island.
The Catholic Church has previously come under fire for designer fashion choices, but the bishop insists that the designer donated the garments and Pantelleria was able to “capitalise on his originality in the service of faith and ultimately of God”.
