Crazy parking in Rome may be getting to an end – thanks to Twitter.
Raffaele Clemente, the recently appointed head of Rome's traffic police, has set up an official Twitter account for Rome's police, @PLRomaCapitale. It encourages people to tweet photos of traffic violations, such as double parked cars, cars parked on pedestrian crossings or where there is a no-parking sign – something all too common in the capital. Users are invited to include license plates and the location, so traffic police can take action. Users are also encouraged to tweet photos of damaged streets.
In a few weeks, the account has gathered more than 4,500 followers, who signal violators from across the city every day.
Some people (the offenders?) have protested, saying the practice violates people’s privacy, but the reports keep on coming.
Will name & shame deter traffic violators?
