Firefighters are hard at work in Sicily trying to save whatever is possible from a fire that started in the natural reserve Cava Grande di Cassibile, in the province of Siracusa.
The fire's origins are almost certainly a result of arsonists - with flames starting up at three different locations along the deep natural canyon that is rich in vegetation and wildlife.
Scores of firefighters and water planes are trying to get the fire under control.
At the same time fires continue to trouble several other points of South Italy, from Sardinia to Calabria.
