Last December, a 13-meter-high red horn appeared in front of Caserta’s Royal Palace.
The sculpture, titled Good Luck Caserta, sparked an outcry, as we reported on ITALY Magazine.
At the beginning of January, the giant horn was removed, officially for maintenance reasons. The horn is currently back where it was first conceived: the Maione Atelier in Caserta. Showing sign of wear and vandalism, the horn needs some fresh paint, while the cylindrical base will be reconstructed. Once restored, it will be relocated to a different place, Parco Maria Carolina, near the Royal Palace.
Caserta mayor Pio Del Gaudio continues to assert that the installation was conceived as a good luck charm and a way to attract tourists to the city.
Personally, I do not think the Royal Palace of Caserta needs a horn placed in front of its entrance to attract tourists. One of the largest buildings erected in Europe in the 18th century to rival Versailles, the Palace was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 for its spectacular Baroque art.
