New Zealand Businessman Buys Budelli Island Of Sardinia

The stunningly beautiful and immaculate island of Budelli in the Maddalena archipelago of Sardinia was sold at an auction for 2,94 million Euro. The buyer is a New Zealand businessman whose name was not revealed. His company is based in Switzerland. However, the New Zealander could soon lose his new acquisition as the Italian Ministry of Environment and the Park Authority could claim their preemption right within 90 days, as long as they correspond the same amount paid at the auction. Budelli is an unspoilt island of 1.6 square kilometres, part of the La Maddalena National Park. It is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It is especially renowned for its Spiaggia Rosa ("Pink Beach"), in the south-eastern part of the island, which owes its typical color to microscopic fragments of corals and shells. Budelli is one of four uninhabited islands in the Maddalena archipelago. Construction is banned on the island and access is only permitted alongside a member of staff from the park's authority. The buyer’s lawyer said the entrepreneur bought the island with the aim to protect its ecosystem. Budelli went on auction after the previous owner went bankrupt.
