Valpolicella’s hills rise and fall in a sinuous cascade of foliage. Oak and chestnut trees crowd the summits, lording it over peach, fig almond and olive trees, sage, rosemary and bay leaves, and the hundred tidy rows of vines that stretch down the slopes to the valleys.
One of the best places to contemplate this genteel countryside is a house for sale near the top of Monte Pastello.
“Quite simply, this property has one of the best views in the region,” say selling agents Veneto Select. “It looks directly south through the entire Valpolicella valley and over west Verona and beyond. On a clear day it is possible to see the Appennini mountains several hundreds miles away.”
Even better, the house matches the views. It is part of a reconstructed farmstead, which an architect converted into seven exclusive homes. Laid across three floors, it has a large kitchen, dining room and laundry room on the ground floor, a panoramic sitting room taking up the whole of the first floor, and two bedrooms on the top floor, one of which affords spectacular views over Verona and the Valpolicella while the other overlooks Monte Pastello.
The interiors have been decorated with a profusion of marble (on the ground and first floors, in the bathrooms, on the staircases) and wood (there are traditional timbered ceilings and wooden floorings), while the outdoor space includes a pretty private garden and a parking area.
Despite all this, the asking price is a “very reasonable” £350,000—particularly appealing when considering that the property is only 30 minutes away from Verona and its international airport, 40 minutes from Lake Garda, 45 minutes from the ski slopes and just over one hour from Venice.
