Aftershocks in the central Abruzzo region continued Tuesday, more than a week after the devastating April 6 earthquake that left 294 dead.

Nine quakes of between 2.5 and 3.0 on the Richter scale with five different epicentres had hit the region by Tuesday afternoon, while there were 11 aftershocks on Monday including one registering 4.9 at 23:14 (21:14 GMT) - one of the strongest since the April 6 quake, which measured 5.8 on the scale.

The National Geophysics and Vulcanology Institute said aftershocks have been moving away from Abruzzo capital L'Aquila, northeast to the Gran Sasso mountain.
