Suor Cristina Scuccia, winner of The Voice Italy 2014, is back and has surprised everyone again: with her first album expected to be out next month, she has released a single: a cover of Madonna’s Like a Virgin.
As in Madonna’s original music video, the location is Venice, however the atmosphere, (clothing) and the song itself are quite different: in the nun’s version, it is more of a romantic ballad than a pop tune.
“I chose it myself, without any desire to provoke or scandalize,” Suor Cristina told the Catholic newspaper Avvenire. “If you read the lyrics without being influenced by what has gone before, you discover that it is a song about the capacity of love to make people new again. To release them from their past. And this is how I wanted to interpret it. That’s why we’ve transformed it from the pop-dance track it was into a romantic ballad a bit in the style of Amos Lee.”
