Three Italian Films Compete In Venice Film Festival

Three Italian films will vie for the coveted Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The films by Italian directors include Gianni Amelio’s ‘L’intrepido’ (The Intrepid). A previous winner of the Golden Lion for 1998’s ‘Così ridevano’ (The Way We Laughed), Amelio’s latest movie is a tragicomedy starring Italian comic actor Antonio Albanese. The other Italian films competing are Sicilian director Emma Dante’s debut feature ‘Via Castellana Bandiera’ (A Street In Palermo) about two women car drivers who refuse to give way to each other, and Gianfranco Rosi’s 2012 documentary ‘Sacro GRA’ about the lives of those who live on the margins of society on the highway that surrounds Rome. Among the 20 films competing for the Golden Lion, are Terry Gilliam’s ‘The Zero Theorem’ starring Tilda Swinton and Matt Damon, Jonathan Glazer’s ‘Under the Skin’ with Scarlett Johansson, and Stephen Frears’ ‘Philomena’ featuring Dame Judi Dench. The 70th Venice International Film Festival runs from 28 August to 7 September 2013.
