A project to create the first ever virtual online museum devoted to the Italian city of Venice has been launched.
The ‘Meraviglie di Venezia: tesori sacri e profani nell’area di San Marco’ (Wonders of Venice: Sacred and Profane Treasures in the St. Mark’s Area) project uses multimedia tools that will allow viewers to see approximately 400 works of art. The virtual museum will be accessible via smartphones, tablets and computers.
The online museum will include four virtual tours, 236 3D models of objects of cultural and historical interest, 15 videos and 398 virtual objects. It will allows users to see buildings and objects in the area of St. Mark’s Square, including the Lion of Venice ancient bronze winged statue of a lion and treasures from the Basilica.
The virtual environment will use 3D technology to enable users to see a deconstructed representation of the winged lion revealing the successive renovations to the sculpture over the years, as well as trace the history and evolution of what has become the iconic symbol of the city.
