The Christmas tree greeting visitors at the entrance of the Re Mida Center near Bologna is both beautiful and environmental-friendly. Made entirely from recycled and waste materials, it is just one example of what can be done with reclaimed materials.
Established in the mid-90s in Reggio-Emilia, the original Re Mida was soon followed by many other locations which opened throughout Italy and the world, promoting the culture of recycling and sustainability. “Remida is a place that promotes the idea that waste materials can be resources,” the website states. “The Center collects, displays, and distributes alternative and reclaimed materials obtained from the unsold stock and scrap materials of industrial production, with the aim to reinvent their use and meaning.”
The headquarters, now located in Calderara di Reno in the province of Bologna, distribute materials such as paper, cardboard, ceramic, paints, cord, leather, rubber and wood, to teachers of preschools and schools, to educational and cultural associations, senior citizens' centers, and recreation centers.
Thinking of the holidays just around the corner, the Re Mida centers also provide an opportunity to look for Christmas gifts that are at the same time unique and environmental-friendly.
