Do not miss the chance to explore arts, history and heritage after dark at museums and galleries across Rome for the sixth edition of "La Notte dei Musei" (Night of Museums) for the European Night of Museums that will take place during the night of the 17th to the 18th of May.
Saturday night, museums will stay open for a special international event involving more than 3,000 museums in 40 European countries.
In Rome, city museums will be open till 2 a.m. local time on Sunday while national museums will be open till midnight. The programme includes special exhibits, theatre shows and readings for a one-euro entry fee.
Many embassies, foreign academies and cultural institutes in Rome will also open their doors to the public.
Mayor Ignazio Marino is hoping to include a night entry to the Colosseum, in spite of a staff shortage that makes it unlikely. He is holding talks with Culture Minister Dario Franceschini to find a solution.
The European Night of Museums was created in 2005 by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication. On this occasion, the closing time of the museums is postponed to approximately one in the morning, which allows the public to visit the participating museums by night, for free. This year will celebrate the tenth edition of the European night of Museums.
