Driving To Italy - Route Finder

06/01/2011 - 09:25

For many years now I have used the likes of 'mappy', 'via michelin' etc for calculating different routes down to Italy - for us its a part of our holiday, so we don't always want to take the quickest/shortest route down.  We prefer to vary the route taken, with different places to stop overnight. Bing maps seem to have taken over 'multimap' [at least they have on my PC]  Bing has one very useful/easy facility that makes it worthwhile recommending that fellow travellers have a look at it. With Bing, once it has mapped the 'recommended' route, you can easily drag the route to pick up places you want to visit on the way, and it quickly re-maps the route and re-calculates the time/distance/directions - so, as an example, getting it to take the 'Basel Bypass' takes literally a couple of seconds. A minor niggle I have with the planners is that they calculate journey time on the assumption that you can (and want to) travel exactly on the speed limit for the whole of your route. Which means that unless you do that, your ETA gets steadily later. At least with TomTom you can programme in a maximum speed for your vehicle (say 100 kph), which is a quick and dirty way of getting a better idea of how long it really takes. Then your ETA improves as you travel. Terry

Almost without exception, for us [allowing for meal and loo stops etc] we average 50mph on a longish run [Its a bit more on the dash back to the ferry - but that's because we try and stay as long as possible in Italy]
