Amazing Dolomites: Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo are three of the most famous peaks of the Dolomites, considered among the most breathtaking natural wonders in the world of mountaineering - and rightly so.
Located in the Sesto Dolomites, in the high Puster Valley of South Tyrol, the three uniquely-shaped sheer pinnacles, which stand right next to each other, are:
Cima Piccola, or little peak, 2857m
Cima Grande, or big peak, 2999m
Cima Ovest, or western peak, 2973m
The first ascent was in 1869, when Paul Grohmann climbed the Cima Grande.
The view of the Tre Cime is stunning from all sides. You can admire them up close via the Tre Cime di Lavaredo loop, which allows you to circumnavigate them.
The path, which becomes very crowded in the summer months, begins at Rifugio Auronzo (2320m), accessed via a toll road from Misurina (Auronzo di Cadore). You can also reach the hut by bus, but if you want to avoid the traffic and avoid contributing to the congestion and pollution that affect the area in the summer months, you could reach the hut on foot in about two hours.
The loop itself is 10 km and takes about three and a half hours to complete. Heading east along path 101, you will reach the famous Rifugio Locatelli, another stunning viewpoint over the Tre Cime. Continue along 101 to Rifugio Pian di Cengia, and then on 104 to Rifugio Lavaredo for the final stretch back to the starting point, Rifugio Auronzo.
During World War I, the front between Italy and Austria ran through the Tre Cime. Tunnels, fortifications, trenches, iron ladders and strategic observation points are still visible.
Le Tre Cime di Lavaredo sono tre delle vette più famose delle Dolomiti, considerate tra le meraviglie naturali più mozzafiato nel mondo dell'alpinismo - e giustamente.
Situate nelle Dolomiti di Sesto, nell'Alta Val Pusteria dell'Alto Adige, questi tre pinnacoli dalle pareti a picco, che si ergono l'uno accanto all'altro, sono distinte in:
Cima Piccola, 2857m
Cima Grande, 2999m
Cima Ovest, 2973m
La prima ascesa alpinistica avvenne nel 1869, quando Paul Grohmann scalò la Cima Grande.
La vista delle Tre Cime è sensazionale da ogni lato. I tre massicci si possono ammirare da vicino grazie ad un giro ad anello che permette di circumnavigarli.
Il sentiero, che diventa molto affollato nei mesi estivi, inizia al Rifugio Auronzo (2320 m), accessibile tramite una strada a pedaggio da Misurina (Auronzo di Cadore). E’ possibile raggiungere il rifugio con l'autobus; se si vuole evitare il traffico ed evitare anche di contribuire alla congestione e all'inquinamento che affliggono l'area nei mesi estivi, si può decidere di raggiungere il rifugio a piedi in circa due ore.
La camminata ha una lunghezza di 10 km e ci vogliono circa tre ore e mezza per completarla. Proseguendo verso est lungo il sentiero 101, si arriva al famoso Rifugio Locatelli, un altro splendido punto panoramico sulle Tre Cime. Si prosegue lungo il 101 fino al Rifugio Pian di Cengia, e poi sul 104 fino al Rifugio Lavaredo per il tratto finale sino al punto di partenza, il Rifugio Auronzo.
Durante la prima guerra mondiale, il fronte tra Italia e Austria attraversava le Tre Cime. Tunnel, fortificazioni, trincee, scale di ferro e punti di osservazione strategici sono ancora visibili.
