Empress Elizabeth of Austria – Sissi – loved the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle in Merano so much they are now often referred to as ‘Sissi’s Gardens’.
Set in a natural amphitheater, these botanical gardens, the most famous and visited in South Tyrol, cover 12 hectares, with 80 dedicated displays of local, Mediterranean and exotic plants from around the world, organized by region of origin. Especially notable are: Forests of the World, Sun Gardens (Mediterranean plants), Terraced and Water-Based Gardens, and Landscapes of South Tyrol.
With breathtaking views over the surrounding mountains, visitors can stroll along 6 kilometers of paths, interspersed with staircases, pavilions, waterfalls and suspended lookout points.
Amid the park is Trauttmansdorff Castle, which is also worth a visit, with its interesting Touriseum, a museum on the history of tourism in South Tyrol.
Empress Sissi sojourned at the castle twice and it was indeed thanks to her that Merano became a fashionable destination with the aristocrats of the time. Sissi appreciated its mild climate and the long walks she could take – there is also a promenade dedicated to her, which connects Merano’s center to the gardens.
Sissi visited Merano four times; she stayed twice at Trauttmansdorff Castle. The first time was in 1870, when she rented the most sumptuous rooms, which had been renovated before her arrival. The empress brought along her two-year-old ill daughter, Marie Valerie. During the eight months at the castle, she led quite the solitary life, taking long walks. After Sissi’s stay and her daughter’s recovery, Merano became famous as a health resort.
Sissi returned a second time to Trauttmansdorff Castle, a year and a half after the death of her son Rudolf, but only spent six weeks there as she was forced to leave when a bad storm was forecast.
The gardens at Trauttmansdorff Castle are open March 30 to October 15.
L'imperatrice Elisabetta d'Austria - Sissi - apprezzò così tanto i Giardini di Castel Trauttmansdorff a Merano che oggi essi sono conosciuti anche come i ‘Giardini di Sissi’.
Situati in un anfiteatro naturale, questi giardini botanici, i più famosi e visitati in Alto Adige, coprono 12 ettari, con 80 esposizioni dedicate a piante locali, mediterranee ed esotiche provenienti da tutto il mondo, organizzate per zona d'origine. Particolarmente degni di nota sono: Boschi del Mondo, I Giardini del Sole (piante mediterranee), Giardini Acquatici e Terrazzati, e Paesaggi dell'Alto Adige.
Con una vista mozzafiato sulle montagne circostanti, i visitatori possono passeggiare lungo 6 chilometri di sentieri, intervallati da scalinate, padiglioni, cascate e punti panoramici sospesi.
Nel mezzo del parco si trova il castello di Trauttmansdorff, che merita una visita, con il suo interessante Touriseum, un museo sulla storia del turismo in Alto Adige.
L'imperatrice Sissi soggiornò due volte al castello e fu proprio grazie a lei che Merano divenne una destinazione alla moda per gli aristocratici dell'epoca. Sissi apprezzava il clima mite e le lunghe camminate che poteva fare - c'è anche una passeggiata a lei dedicata che collega il centro di Merano ai giardini.
Sissi visitò Merano quattro volte; due volte soggiornò al castello di Trauttmansdorff. La prima volta fu nel 1870, quando affittò le stanze più lussuose, che erano state ristrutturate prima del suo arrivo. L'imperatrice portò con sé la figlia malata di due anni, Marie Valerie. Durante gli otto mesi trascorsi al castello, condusse una vita solitaria, facendo lunghe passeggiate. Dopo il soggiorno di Sissi e la guarigione di sua figlia, Merano divenne famosa come località di cura.
Sissi tornò una seconda volta a Castel Trauttmansdorff, un anno e mezzo dopo la morte di suo figlio Rudolf, ma vi trascorse solo sei settimane; fu costretta ad andarsene a causa di una brutta tempesta in arrivo.
I giardini di Castel Trauttmansdorff sono aperti dal 30 marzo al 15 ottobre.
