Molise: The Unsung Italian Region

Overlooked by most visitors, the small region of Molise, in south-central Italy, extends between the ridge of the Apennine mountains to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east, with many interesting places to explore in between.
The land, mostly mountainous and hilly, is traversed by the typical ‘tratturi’, or sheep tracks, the historic routes used by shepherds to move their flocks during the periods of the transhumance to reach the pastures of Abruzzo to the north and of Puglia to the south. They represent a compelling testimony of the rural civilization of the past and are one of the highlights of a visit to Molise.
Molise’s two main towns are Campobasso and Isernia. Rich in history and culture, Campobasso is dominated by the imposing Castello Monforte. The Museo Provinciale Sannitico displays interesting finds from the civilizations that lived in the area from prehistory to the Samnite period.
Just outside Isernia is a fascinating prehistoric area, while the center houses a number of historic monuments, among them a 13th-century fountain.
Artisanal activities are still strong in Molise, and for those who enjoy traditional crafts, the small centers of Agnone and Scampoli are a must stop: the first specializes in the production of bells for churches around the world; the second is the town of bagpipes, with a museum celebrating this ancient musical instrument.
There are also notable archeological sites, such as Pietrabbondante, with a beautiful theater, Sepino, with the remains of an ancient Roman settlement, and Larino, which guards a magnificent example of medieval art, the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral. Many castles and abbeys dot the territory.
Molise also boasts some beautiful natural landscapes, such as those found in the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise. Campitello Maltese is one of the most famous ski resorts of southern Italy, while those who prefer the seaside will find sandy beaches along the coast, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, honored with the prestigious Bandiera Blu recognition for cleanliness.
Trascurata dalla maggior parte dei visitatori, la piccola regione del Molise, nel centro-sud d’Italia, si estende tra la dorsale appenninica a ovest e il mare Adriatico a est, e vanta molti luoghi interessanti da esplorare.
Il terreno, prevalentemente montuoso e collinare, è solcato dai tipici tratturi, i percorsi storici utilizzati dai pastori per le loro greggi durante i periodi di transumanza per raggiungere i pascoli abruzzesi a nord e pugliesi a sud. I tratturi rappresentano una testimonianza emozionante della civiltà rurale del passato e sono uno dei tratti salienti di una visita in Molise.
Le due città principali del Molise sono Campobasso e Isernia. Ricca di storia e di cultura, Campobasso è dominata dall'imponente Castello Monforte. Il Museo Provinciale Sannitico mostra interessanti reperti delle civiltà che vissero nella zona dalla preistoria al periodo sannitico.
Appena fuori Isernia vi è un’affascinante area preistorica, mentre il centro ospita una serie di monumenti storici, tra i quali una fontana del 13° secolo.
Le attività artigianali sono ancora forti in Molise, e per chi ama l'artigianato tradizionale, i piccoli centri di Agnone e Scampoli sono da non perdere: il primo è specializzato nella produzione di campane per le chiese di tutto il mondo; il secondo è il luogo delle cornamuse, con un museo che celebra questo antico strumento musicale.
Ci sono anche importanti siti archeologici, come Pietrabbondante, con un bellissimo teatro, Sepino, con i resti di un antico insediamento romano, e Larino, che custodisce un magnifico esempio di arte medievale, la cattedrale romanico-gotica. Molti castelli e abbazie punteggiano il territorio.
Il Molise vanta anche bei paesaggi naturali, come quelli che si trovano nel Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise. Campitello Maltese è una delle più famose località sciistiche del sud Italia, mentre per chi preferisce il mare spiagge sabbiose circondate da vegetazione mediterranea si trovano lungo la costa, insignite del prestigioso riconoscimento Bandiera Blu per la pulizia.
