Unfurling Amerigo Vespucci's sails

One morning while walking on Riva degli Schiavoni in Venice, contemplating the beauty that surrounded me and thinking that nothing could get better than a walk along St. Mark's Basin and its wonderful buildings, I suddenly realized I was wrong. As soon as I saw the majestic beauty of the Amerigo Vespucci floating on the Venetian lagoon I knew it was a once in a lifetime occasion. Venice offered the most perfect setting for this amazing historical sailing ship and as soon as I reached the deck I knew I would have never seen Venice from a more privileged position.
This magnificent tall ship of the Marina Militare, named after the explorer Amerigo Vespucci, is based in Livorno, and shows up in Venice from time to time as it cruises the Mediterranean or travels to sailing-ship regattas and other events around the world. It normally moors along the waterfront near the Giardini Pubblici and the Biennale grounds, and public tours are often available.
She is 78 years old, but certainly does not show it. Designed by the naval genius, Lieutenant-colonel Francesco Rotundi, built at the Naval Shipyard of Castellammare di Stabia in 1930 as replica of an 18th century vessel, she was first launched the 22nd of February 1931 and was put into service in July of that year. The vessel is still a training ship used by the Naval Academy, it is a full rigged three masted steel hull 82.4 m (270.34 ft) long, with an overall length of 101 m (331 ft) and a maximum width of 15.5 m (51 ft). She has a draught of about 7,30 metres (23 ft) and a displacement at full load of 4150 tons.
The hull is painted black with two white stripes in reference to the two gun decks of the original ships the design is based on, but she carries only two 6pdr saluting guns. The deck planks are of teak wood and need to be replaced every three years. Bow and stern are decorated with intricate ornaments and there is a life-size figurehead of Amerigo Vespucci. The smooth stream-lined shape gives an immediate idea of speed and strenght and her way to advance denotes an unmistakable imposing elegance, like that of a queen aware of her own beauty.
The standard crew comprises 16 officers, 70 non-commissioned officers, and 200 sailors. In summer, when she embarks the midshipmen of the Livorno Naval Academy, there's a total crew of about 450 persons aboard, all sharing an authentic and sincere love for the sea.
The ship has already been used for 71 "Training Campaigns", all the cruses have different itineraries; so far 37 campaigns in Northern Europe, 20 campaigns in the Mediterranean, 4 in Eastern Athlantic, 7 in North America, 1 in South America and one memorable tour of the world cruse.
This summer the Vespucci will be at sea for the usual summer campaign carrying with her stately presence, a message of pride and peace. This year itinerary (6th July to 19th September) includes Nice in France, La Goullette in Tunisia, Civitavecchia near Rome, Istanbul in Turkey, Varna in Bulgaria, Odessa in the Ukraine, Costanza in Roumania, Iraklion in Greece, then back to Italy with a stop in Portoferraio and then back in Livorno.

Una mattina mentre camminavo a Riva degli Schiavoni a Venezia, contemplando la bellezza che mi circondava e pensando che niente sarebbe mai stato meglio di una passeggiata lungo il Bacino di San Marco ed i suoi meravigliosi palazzi, ho bruscamente capito di avere torto. Appena vidi la maestosa bellezza dell'Amerigo Vesoucci galleggiare nella laguna Veneziana capì che si trattava di un'occasione unica. Venezia offriva lo scenario perfetto per questo meraviglioso Veliero storico e non appena raggiunsi il ponte capì che non avrei mai più visto Venezia da una posizione tanto privilegiata.
Questo magnifico veliero della Marina Militare, che ha il nome dell'esploratore Amerigo Vespucci, ha la base a Livorno, ed a volte mentre viaggia per il Mediterraneo o va a partecipare a regate o altri eventi in giro per il mondo, si ferma a Venezia. Solitamente ormeggia lungo la riva vicino ai Giardini Pubblici e alla sede della Biennale e spesso vi è la possibilità di visitarla.
Ha 78 anni, ma certamente non li dimostra. Progettata dal genio navale, Luogotenente-colonnello Francesco Rotundi, costruita presso i cantieri navali di Castellammare di Stabia nel 1930 su modello di un veliero del XVIII sec., fu varata il 22 Febbraio 1931 ed entrò in servizio nel Luglio dello stesso anno. Il veliero è ancora usato per l'addestramento dall' Accademia Navale, ha tre alberi attrezzati con scafo in acciaio lungo 82.4 m,con una lunghezza totale di 101 m (331 ft) ed una larghezza massima di 15.5 m (51 ft). Ha un pescaggio di 7,30 m ed un dislocamento a pieno carico di 4.150 t.
Lo scafo è nero con due strisce bianche in linea con le batterie delle navi originali che furono prese come modello, ma ha a bordo solo due cannoni da 60 mm usati per le salve di saluto. Le assi dei ponti sono fatta in teak e devono essere sostituite ogni tre anni. Poppa e prua sono decorate con ricchi ornamenti e con un mezzo busto a grandezza naturale di Amerigo Vespucci. La sagoma snella, dà un' immediata sensazione di velocità e di forza ed il suo incedere ha l'impronta inconfondibile di una eleganza imponente, quella di una regina consapevole della propria bellezza.
Il suo equipaggio standard è composto da 16 ufficiali, 70 sottoufficiali e circa 200 marinai. In estate, quando si imbarcano gli allievi dell’Accademia Navale di Livorno, l'equipaggio raggiunge un totale di 480 unità a bordo, tutti con un autentico e sincero amore per il mare da condividere.
La nave ha già effettuato già 71 campagne d'addestramento, che avvengono con itinerari diversi; in particolare questa nave scuola si è recata in Nord Europa 37 volte, 20 in Mediterraneo, 4 in Atlantico Orientale, 7 in Nord America, 1 in Sud America ed 1 indimenticabile campagna circumnavigando il Globo.
Questa estate, la Vespucci sarà in mare per l'usuale campagna estiva portando ovunque con la sua altera presenza un messaggio di fierezza e di pace. Quest'anno l'itinerario (dal 6 Luglio al 19 Settembre) include Nizza in Francia, La Goullette in tunisia, Civitavecchia vicino Roma, Istanbul in Turchia, Varna in Bulgaria, Odessa in Ukraina, Costanza in Romania, Iraklion in Grecia, poi di ritorno in Italia con una tappa a Portoferraio e poi rientro a Livorno.
