The Venice Film Festival: The Basics

The Venice Film Festival is the world’s oldest film festival, founded in 1932. Alongside the Cannes Film Festival and the Berlin Film Festival, it is part of the “Big Three” most prestigious film festivals in the world.
The Venice Film Festival began as an idea of the president of the Venice Biennale in the 1930s, Count Giuseppe Volpi di Misurata, and Luciano De Feo, its first director. (What many people don’t realize is that the festival is actually part of the Venice Biennale, founded in 1895 by the Venetian City Council.)
The first edition of the Venice Film Festival was held on the terrace of the Hotel Excelsior on the Venice Lido. The festival still takes place on the Lido, with films showing in the historic Palazzo del Cinema on the Lungomare Marconi and other venues nearby.
The best film is awarded the Golden Lion, which takes its name from the symbol of Venice, the lion of the Basilica of San Marco; the best director gets the Silver Lion. The Grand Jury prize is considered the second place award next to the Golden Lion. The Marcello Mastroianni Award, named in honor of the great Italian actor, is given to an emerging actor or actress.
Through the years, the festival has attracted major Italian and international film personalities, and has launched the careers of many directors, including Federico Fellini and Michelangelo Antonioni.
The Venice Film Festival takes place every year between the end of August and the beginning of September.
La Mostra del Cinema di Venezia è il più antico festival cinematografico del mondo, fondato nel 1932. Insieme al Festival di Cannes e al Festival di Berlino, è parte dei "Magnifici Tre,” vale a dire i tre più prestigiosi festival del cinema al mondo.
Il Festival di Venezia è nato dall'idea del presidente della Biennale di Venezia negli anni ‘30, il conte Giuseppe Volpi di Misurata, e di Luciano De Feo, il suo primo direttore. (Non tutti sanno che il festival fa parte infatti della Biennale di Venezia, fondata nel 1895 dal Comune di Venezia.)
La prima edizione della mostra del cinema si svolse sulla terrazza dell'Hotel Excelsior al Lido di Venezia. La mostra si svolge ancora al Lido; le proiezioni dei film hanno luogo nello storico Palazzo del Cinema sul Lungomare Marconi e in altri luoghi nelle vicinanze.
Il miglior film riceve il Leone d'oro, che prende il nome dal simbolo di Venezia, il leone della Basilica di San Marco; il miglior regista ottiene il Leone d'Argento. Il gran premio della giuria è considerato il secondo premio più importante dopo il Leone d'Oro. Il Premio Marcello Mastroianni, così denominato in onore del grande attore italiano, è conferito a un attore o attrice emergente.
Nel corso degli anni, il festival ha attirato grandi personalità del cinema italiano e internazionale, e ha lanciato le carriere di molti registi, tra cui Federico Fellini e Michelangelo Antonioni.
Il Festival del Cinema di Venezia si svolge ogni anno tra la fine di agosto e l'inizio di settembre.
