Florence’s Cathedral, or Santa Maria del Fiore, is the world’s third largest church, after St. Peter’s in Rome and St. Paul’s in London. It is 153 meters long, 90 meters high, and 90 meters wide.
Designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, it was dedicated to Santa Maria del Fiore, the flower (‘fiore’) in question being a reference to the lily, symbol of the city.
Santa Maria del Fiore was built over a previous cathedral, the second built in Florence, which had been dedicated to Santa Reparata. In fact, you can see the remains of that ancient church in the so-called crypt, which were brought to light in the 20th century and represent the most important evidence of the early stages of Christianity in Florence.
Because it took so long to build the Cathedral of Florence (1296 - 1436), the building presents different styles, reflecting the time period in which the different parts were completed.
The facade is covered with marble panels in shades of green and pink, bordered by white.
The cathedral of Florence, also known simply as the Duomo, sits on Piazza del Duomo, where you can also find the Baptistery and Giotto’s Campanile. Together they form the Cathedral complex, part of the Unesco World Heritage site that comprises the whole historic center of Florence.
The Cathedral complex is Florence’s major tourist attraction and often the first site tourists flock to during a visit to the city. For this reason, it is advisable to book your entrance ticket in advance, especially if you want to climb up the world-famous cupola designed by Brunelleschi and also up Giotto’s Campanile. Many steps, but worth the effort!
Nowadays, it is also possible to visit the Cathedral’s terraces, for a beautiful view of Florence’s center and surrounding hills, as well as a close-up view of the marble surfaces recently restored, and of the marvels that are Brunelleschi’s Cupola and Giotto’s Campanile.
Il Duomo di Firenze, o Santa Maria del Fiore, è la terza chiesa più grande del mondo, dopo San Pietro a Roma e San Paolo a Londra. È lungo 153 metri, alto 90 e largo 90.
Progettata da Arnolfo di Cambio, fu dedicata a Santa Maria del Fiore; il fiore in questione è un riferimento al giglio, simbolo della città.
Santa Maria del Fiore fu costruita su una precedente cattedrale, la seconda costruita a Firenze, che era stata dedicata a Santa Reparata. Nella cosiddetta cripta infatti, si possono vedere i resti di quell'antica chiesa, riportati alla luce nel XX° secolo; essi rappresentano la testimonianza più importante delle prime fasi del cristianesimo a Firenze.
Poiché ci volle molto tempo per costruire il Duomo di Firenze (1296 - 1436), l'edificio presenta stili diversi, che riflettono il periodo di tempo nel quale le diverse parti furono completate.
La facciata è rivestita con pannelli di marmo nei toni del verde e del rosa, incorniciati di bianco.
La cattedrale di Firenze, nota anche semplicemente come il Duomo, si trova in Piazza del Duomo, dove si trovano anche il Battistero e il Campanile di Giotto. Insieme formano il complesso del Duomo, parte del sito Unesco patrimonio mondiale dell’umanità che comprende tutto il centro storico di Firenze.
Il complesso del Duomo è la principale attrazione turistica di Firenze e spesso il primo sito verso cui i turisti si riversano durante una visita alla città. Per questo motivo, è consigliabile prenotare in anticipo il biglietto d'ingresso, soprattutto se si vuole salire sulla famosa cupola progettata dal Brunelleschi e sul Campanile di Giotto. Tanti scalini, ma ne vale la pena!
Oggi è possibile visitare anche le terrazze del Duomo, per una bellissima vista sul centro di Firenze e sulle colline circostanti, oltre che per una veduta ravvicinata delle superfici marmoree recentemente restaurate, e di quelle meraviglie che sono la Cupola del Brunelleschi e il Campanile di Giotto.
