Six British tourists on Tuesday snapped up the opportunity to spend a night in a suite of one of Italy's most expensive hotels for 3.56 euros.

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Venice's luxury 5-star Hotel Cipriani offered suites on its website for today's equivalent of 8,000 lire - the amount it cost to stay in the hotel's top rooms on May 26, 1958.

Today a stay in one of the Cipriani's lagoon-view suites, some of which boast pink marble bathrooms, private gardens with outdoor hot tubs and butlers, costs between 1,000 and 2,900 euros.

American presidents Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon and actors Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer have been among the hotel's patrons.

The British tourists were the six fastest people to book the rooms on the hotel website following an ad published in The Times.
