Marsala in Sicily has won European Wine City Competition 2013.
The decision to award this prestigious title to Marsala was taken unanimously by the board of directors of the European Network of Wine Cities (RECEVIN). The network consists of towns or groups of towns that belong to the European Union and which have a strong economic dependence on viticulture and are located in areas with protected quality wine guarantees.
Marsala beat other competitors including the town of Barbaresco, representing the Langhe, and Valdobbiadene, representing the area of Prosecco Superiore DOCG production. The Nomination Gala is scheduled for February.
Located in the Trapani region on the west coast of Sicily, Marsala has a rich cultural heritage and landscape. With an economy based mainly on agriculture and the wine industry, Marsala has developed its tourist potential in recent years and hosts various wine and gastronomic events. Marsala wine is world renowned and produced using the Grillo, Inzolia and Catarratto white grape varieties.
The contest operates on a rotating basis among the various countries in the RECEVIN network, which was established in 2012. Last year, the Portuguese city of Palmela won the competition. In 2013, the winning city is in Italy, in 2014 in Spain and in 2015 in France.
