Most of the Vatican’s prized documents are only available to a select few who visit the archives within the walls of Vatican City, but NASA is prepared to offer a technological solution and digitize the entire collection.
Within ten years, anyone with an internet connection will be able to access the priceless documents without having to make a trip to Rome. All 80,000 manuscripts in the Vatican Apostolic Library will be available in digital copies thanks to a data system developed by NASA.
The full on-line library will take years to finalize due to the sheer number of fragile documents that need to be accounted for, but converting each manuscript into digital form will ensure that the artefacts are protected for years to come.
Some of the most anticipated documents that will be made available from the Vatican’s vaults include: a Greek version of the Bible, the two ancient manuscripts with the works of Virgil and Petrarch, and a rare edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy.
