8801 Home Insurance

Has anyone got any idea about rebuilding costs in Abruzzo? We are just about to buy a house and have not really got any idea how much to insure for.

€1500 - €1800 /m2 would more than cover re structuring building costs with any incident for a standard Italian house.

Hello

Sorry this is not an answer as I'm not sure of rebuild costs, but does anyone know best place to get House Insurance, an English company who specialise in overseas property or an Italian Insurance company. I don't speak anywhere near good enough Italian to communicate at this level, so ones with Websites you can view in English would be great.

Thanks
Sean

We use Italsure. Do a search here for them and you will find that quite a few members use them and are happy with them.

Hi there

Thanks for the info. I'll have a look and see what quotes they give.

Cheers

Have you ever thought about not carrying the burden of 'insurance'? It is (usually) an option.

We have lived here full time for four years and took a decision when we moved out here not to insure our house or contents. It was done because we felt that we had spent a fortune in insurance for many years in the uk, and for what? We do not have anything of any great value in our house, and we have the double benefit of a dog, and wondefully nosy neighbours who are better than any guard dog.

Hi Mammamia

What about a fire, water damage etc. these could be catastrophic! I agree paying insurance companies really hurts, especially when you look at earthquake cover, but I do sleep easier in my bed knowing that we might be 'rescued' financially and literally if our house was so damaged that we couldn't live in it for a while. Perhaps, I'm just a cautious sort.

Good luck and best wishes

Well I used to be the cautious sort too, but.... Last winter we had water poring in through one of our walls and I had to spend all evening sucking it up with a vax. After that, my husband and I took the half of the inner wall down, it is stones, and then fitted plastic, cement and then replaced the stones. Looks great, cost peanuts, and solved the problem of water coming in. I actually think that many problems are solvable, as long as you are resourceful. Also it would not take many premiums paid to cover the cost of any maintenance work we have to do because of storms etc. It is just a personal choice, but we certainly feel comfortable with it.

HI Mammamia

Respect! We have some diy skills but nothing like yours!
We are having a new bathroom fitted at the moment because water came through an external wall - over1 metre thick - because of a leak from a rotten pipe. We hope the insurance is going to cough up for a good deal of it. Had the loss adjuster, Perito (?expert) up and he said it was a valid claim... but that is before we present it. Fingers crossed.
Dont' think they'll go for the lovely new shower and betterment though .. :winki::winki::winki:

Believe me, our diy skills are rudimentary, but we are happy to have a go at most things! Thinking further about insurance there are things that we took into account. we dont feel so at risk of fire because we dont have a loft, where most electrical fires start, and our wiring was all changed when we renovated. We have smoke alarms. We unplug everything before we go to bed. we have had two good sized earthquakes since we have been here, which we certainly felt, but the house just jiggled a bit and then settled down. we have some cracks which need filling, but that ok. As for flood, as I said, with stone walls, and no fitted carpets to be ruined, I dont actually lose sleep! I think this is also somethiong to do with getting a lot older!

It's certainly a very personal choice. In UK, I'm insured to the hilt, and one blocked pipe (£11K damage) and one break in (£3.5K contents) have put me way in credit vs. all the premiums I've paid over the past 15 years. We went for the most basic insurance possible on our Italian home because its a holiday home, seldom used and with little worth stealing in it. €160 p.a. to cover buioldings & contents (excluding earthquake/landslip) seemed like a lot of cover for little cost to me. Particularly when we watched the pictures of wild fires ravaging the countryside last few summers ... its really fire that's the only real major fear factor for me, the rest of it I'd be inclined to take as acceptable risk .

I think 160 Euros is a very good price, and certainly if I was to consider insurance, I would think that would be a good deal. back in the Uk we had lots of insurance, on everything, but out here, we are trying to cut down on our monthly outgoings as we have a fixed income of a pension, and want to save as much as we can for the other things in life!

[LEFT]Hi

I think 160 Euros is a good price to. Through an english company I was quoted 160GBP (exl earthquake).

I'd be grateful if you could give me details of the company, this will give me something to compare against a few others.

I see a few people below have mentioned DIY and building work. Does anyone know of any good Geometra/Builders in the Abruzzo region (Pescara, L'aguila) so I can compare. I have posted an article in Building and Renovation but not had any response, so I won't waffle on here what I've written.

Thanks
Sean
