Try as I might, I can't imagine an Italian security man stopping you taking cheese out of Italy!
I guess you never know though!
But, unless it was a large amount of valuable cheese, I guess I'd risk it!

I've taken lumps of parmesan back several times in hand luggage and haven't had any problem

I have often carried such goods as you have listed without problem, however I would avoid olives in brine or other liquids until the liquid rules are changed.
In fact several large chunks of parmesan have travelled in one bag.

Thanks for your replies.
In the past we have taken loads of cheese so maybe give it a try, just trying to get more lighter stuff in the cases, the olives have been in liquid but will taken out for the trip.
Will keep you informed.

I was wondering about this some time ago when I saw a sign at Stansted airport near baggage collection saying it was forbidded to bring in cheese.

I think that this refers to products from OUTSIDE the EU, can anyone confirm?

See question number 14 in this link. But why not email DEFRA to clarify further, in case the information is out of date? (Italy doesn't really have a monopoly on dated info.)

Our daughter travelled last Friday on Ryanair from Biarritz to Stansted. Her suitcase was loaded with ham, salami, and other edibles (no olives, though), all vacuum packed. No problems whatsoever. She was stopped and showed them what she was bringing in and that it was from the EU and there were no objections. I understand that as long as the good originate within the EU and they are vacuum packed and sealed and there are no specific restrictions from that particular area because of diseases affecting animals, there should be no problems.

Just returned from UK. Took cheese over and brought cheese and bacon back, no problems, I put it in suitcase not hand luggage, not sure if it would have made a difference or no.
They weighed our hand luggage this time, at Stansted, it did look packed full, 8.5 and 9 kg so ok.

Liquids include :
* contents of pressurised containers, including shaving foam, other foams
* water and other drinks, soups, syrups and deodorants
* creams, lotions and oils
* pastes, including toothpaste
* perfumes
* liquid-solid mixtures
* sprays
* mascara
* gels, including hair and shower gels
* any other item of similar consistency
That's from the Easyjet website I guess cheese would fall under liquid-solid mixture.
