12015 New Member in Calabria

Salve,

My wife and I bought and renovated a place in Santa Domenica Talao which is a sweet hill village just 5 miles from Scalea and the sea beach and also located on the eastern edge of Parco Nationale del Pollino. Great place with mountain and sea views, which was our objective. Our purchasing and renovation experience was very good there, due much because of a British/Italian estate agent and excellent local architects and craftsmen.

We are Americans in Oregon, and in the 2 years of dealing with Italian and British forums and websites, are slowly learning Italian and British dialects. For instance we know what mains gas, hobs, cookers and boilers are now!

We are retiring in Santa Domenica in the next year or so. This forum is certainly a dandy and the posts are detailed and full of useful information. Glad we came on-board and we'll enjoy participating with y'all (American for all of you).

Ciao a tutti,

Grazie per la accoglienza. Our Italian is weak and old French and Spanish mostly forgotten for lack of use in the states. We had a good two week class in Tropea when we were there looking for properties. Have tried a class here, but the Italian man from Lucca who married an American and was the teacher, did not have teaching skills and we had to stop. Once there, there are [U]free[/U] Italian classes offered by the public school in Scalea. Two hours a day, five days a week. That will be the highest priority once we move-in. As most of you have probably experienced, the lovely Italian village people still welcome us into their homes for great meals and laughs as we try to communicate. The man next door speaks a dialect, but his wife uses Italian and we get by....she enjoys making fun!
