8814 Fire escapes

Hi

We have a second floor apartment in the old town of Sansepolcro in the town centre - to reach it you have to go up a flight of stairs. There is no fire escape so we're thinking whether we should get some sort of ladder attached to two of the windows. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions about where we could buy something like this? What do other people do?!

Any information would be helpful.

Hi Headyheady

There is a ?semi/official fire extinquisher type products shop here in Arezzo. It seems to be the only one for miles around. Unlike uk where you can buy stuff at B & Q and like you cannot buy fire blankets, extinquishers anywhere except 'approved' centre. They also do servicing of equipment etc. Took me forever to find this place, also took almost for ever to get to it!!!!!!!!

This is where we get the fire extinguishers, fire blankets etc for our own house and our rental cottages. We are 500 metres up and need to have something 'just in case'.

They might also do a fire ladder.

We got our fire extinguisher from Butan gas, who supply our gas. We also have smoke alarms but they are much more expensive to guy in Italy so it would be a good idea to bring one with you from the UK if you want one.

As for fire escapes, I think I have seen some metal chain ladders which you unroll out of the window but I have no idea where you would get one. It might be worth asking in your local feramenta.

Hi

We also have smoke detectors but we brought them from the UK, as suggested by Nielo. The ones here seem to have to be fixed in with the electrical system and it looked much too complicated. Also have a carbon monoxide (CO) detector because one of the cottages has a gas boiler - again brought this from the UK.

As you just need to get 'down' to the ground rather than 'up', as a temporary measure you could have knotted ropes firmly fixed beside the windows that you throw out if necessary,

For info on a the more permanent type of solutions - look at;-

Smoke alarms, exactly the same as those in the UK, are widely available here in places like Castorama but they are almost double the price.

Hi Nielo

Who or what are Castorama? I have never heard or seen them here in Tuscany.

Castorama is part of the Kingfisher Group, which also run B&Q in the UK.

Here is a link to a list of their stores.

Thanks Nielo

We have an Obi here, its fantastic, the size of an aircraft hanger and loads of just about everything the diyer could need. Staircases to dishclothes and all inbetween.
I thought Obi also had a b & q link because the colour of the store etc. and logos etc. have quite a similarity - orange with more orange.
