I'd also recommend having a visit to Bologna since you're up that way, it's my favourite city and I don't tire of the place.

Excellent advice! Bologna is beautiful and there are very few tourists.
Enjoy your trip!

If you have two weeks to do the 'tour' I'd suggest you get a book on the northern Italian Lakes, cos I reckon that they would keep you busy for most of the time, whilst allowing time for Venice at the end [2 weeks isn't a long time].
The AA still does a guide to the Northern Lakes - well worth looking at - it includes drives and town visits.
Amazon.co.uk: AA Best Drives Italian Lakes and Northern Italy (AA Best Drives): Books
The blurb states that;-
"The Best Drives series is not just for independent travellers but also for those who wish to know more about each chosen region. The guides are handy, compact and easy-to-use with each region divided into geographical areas.
Town visits accompany detailed itineraries with directions, distances and driving times. Also includes specific city tours with the most scenic and historic places to visit en route. Each tour is pinpointed on a location map on the flaps and there are full colour road maps throughout.
Mileage charts, hotel and restaurant recommendations and practical advice for travelling abroad are all included in these comprehensive guides for the touring enthusiast"
If you have kids [between 3 and 80 yrs old!] - Gardaland is worth a day out

I'd suggest visits to [at least] lakes Maggiore, Como and Garda, with 'days out' in Bergamo Citta Alta [the old town], Verona and Padova [Padua]
Look on town/city websites for agriturismo and B&B places.
Hello again, I got such good advice last summer that I thought I would try again.
We are planning a two week holiday in Italy late April and early May of this year. We want to travel from Milan to Venice (meander around) by rented car and stay at B&B's along the way (not hotels). Does anyone have advice or experience with this? Are there other options that I have not considered? National Parks? Camper? etc.
Any input would be most helpful.
Best Regards,
Don Lowrance
It depends on your definition of "North". But if you find yourself getting down below Ravenna (still in the frozen north to me) I can strongly recommend this place:
I muretti: agriturismo e bed and breakfast in Valconca - Riviera Romagnola, Rimini
It's a really welcoming place to stay, excellent food, wonderful preserves for sale and their own wine is first rate.
In general you'll get a better experience if you stay at agriturismi rather than B&B.
I'd also recommend having a visit to Bologna since you're up that way, it's my favourite city and I don't tire of the place.
