8798 Umbria Now Officially Safer

I was reading yesterday about the 50 arrests in Umbria and Southern Italy (including the Calabrian tourism minister) in a campaign to curb the expansion of Southern organised crime into the region.

The prosecutor and the Carabinieri chief both said that Umbria is now safer as a result of their efforts.:eeeek:

"Umbria and Southern Italy" sounds a bit of a strange grouping ... organised crime is already endemic in the south. Were the vast majority of the arrrests in Umbria? Would be good if you could post a link to the article (if it is online).

HERE'S one story from yesterday. Apparently both the Campania-based Camorra and the Calabria-based Ndrangheta had joined forces to expand their operations into Umbria.

Thanks for that, very interesting. I wonder whether this really represents such activity being nipped in the bud, or if it's just some glossy PR to cover a growing problem?

Oh, and it mentions "shady construction projects" in Umbria ... hope they aren't refering to my newly built south facing portico :-)

It seems that the folks I know who told me about the very very very shady characters who bought their house just to the West of Perugia may not have been joking when they said their purchasers seemed like 'southern business men'. They were absolutely terrified on completion day and had a police escort to get them from the notaio's office to the bank.

Apparently, this section of the family business was into 'adult' films.
