Firenze to Verona to Lucca

05/31/2009 - 14:33

Hoping that you won't mind my using your knowledge to better plan my trip to Tuscany :)We'll be using Firenze as home base and busing/training it to nearby towns... but would like to rent a car for one or two trips. Would love to see Verona, traveling from Firenze through the Futa Pass to stop first at a war cemetary. Would like to stay near Verona in a B&B...and then drive to Lucca, nice and slow off the main roads. ..then home to Firenze. Is that too ambitious for a two day trip?We are very lazy easy-going travelers and would much rather focus more on quality than quantity of places, people, and things seen.Would love any input any of you have.Best,Monica

I think that it may be much easier to go from Florence to Lucca by train on a day trip. There are a couple of trains at least every hour from Santa Maria Novella and the train station at Lucca is centrally located near the San Pietro gate which is one of the main entrances into the old town. The train trip takes only about an hour.On the other hand, if you are driving, I would do Verona and Bologna on the planned two day trip. Bologna is a wonderful city, worth a visit as well and it would be on your way back to Florence.

I've been neglectful and failed to thank you for the reply to my posting back in May...thank you. It was most helpful. We'll still be driving near Lucca, but will save our visit there for a bus or rail trip. Bologna will also be a rail trip as i'm trying to avoid, whenever possible, driving in larger cities.I hope to grab more of your Italian wisdom in the near future :)Smiles,Monica
