I have a 3 network skype phone which I've used a lot here in the UK (and really like - it was incredibly useful leading up to Christmas when I could ring my sister in Canada for "free" as I was Xmas shopping to check on sizes etc.)
3 Network told me that I can use the skype in Italy for no extra charge, i.e. skype calls would be included in my monthly fee (but normal phone calls would be charged at the abroad rates I think). I'll get a chance to try this out when we go at the end of the month and I'll let you know how I get on. So far we have more or less always used an Italian SIM when we are in Italy so I don't know how good the 3 network coverage is in our parts.

Licciana, Just be careful that when in Italy you are slap bang in the middle of a 3 coverage zone when using Skype or any other data-intensive service ... IIRC, Three's "free roaming" data deal only applies on their own network, so if you go outwith that you'll start roaming on another operators GPRS and you'll get billed accordingly per KB (i.e. pay through the nose).
I don't use 3 at resent but I have had a look at their offers (veey attractive if you want mobile internet in BOTH Italy & UK on one affordable, inclusive tarrif). Generally, if you're in a coverage area their deals are good for high bandwidth users. Problem is, as its a 3G only network it's coverage isn't aywhere near as comprehensive as the others. If you just want their Italian coverage map it's here
the map doesn't go into muc detail but if you select your province and comune it will tell you whether or not that comune has 3G coverage.
