8876 Italian bank account opened in the u.k

I wonder if anyone has experience of opening an Italian bank account from London, and if it simplifies matters. This would not be an online account and would be with a bank with a presence in central Italy, for example Umbria or Abruzzo. Many thanks.

If you open an account like that then it would be an UK account.

It could help if the local branch can run some interference for you contacting the Italian branch and vouching for you.

Yes we did this 2 years ago.You will still need to take your passports with you when you go to the branch in Italy but we did all the paperwork in London.

Yes we opened an account from the Uk with the help of the bank's Uk agent.
This was really so that we could send the money over so that it was already there when we arrived.
We had to go in and sign all the same paperwork again "for real" once we got to Italy but had been given all of our account details in advance so that we could arrange the transfer of our purchase price.

You will also need your Codice Fiscale.

No problem. If you think it strange I've not mentioned which bank we are with that's because the chap at the bank kind of did it as a 'one off' I guess. It is one of those listed though.

Hi,
I have read a couple of post now relating to bank enquiries and as I am looking to open an account myself ASAP. I have no idea which account or bank to choose from.
Has anyone ever done a comparison of the accounts on offer from the different banks?

Pros v's Cons: i.e. specific charges, accessibility to your money etc...

Not a lot to choose between certain banks the Post Office seems to be the best though. If your going for a bank just make sure there local to where you live,

I wasn't aware you could open an account with the post office!
I was actually thinking of going with Barclays, due to the fact I can manage it online & go in branch over here, plus I think there is a branch in Cosenza (not too far from me).
Anyone got any horror stories I should know of before I sign up?
Thanks
Andy

We have been comparing the huge "service" charges taken from our account by the Monte dei Paschi di Siena bank, to see what can be done in this changing market. (We expect most banks have knee knocking charges in Italy). Until 2005 we were paying builders large sums but now it's day to day living expenses and Direct debits. In this time English Cos like HIFX came to our rescue. They make no charges to change sterling and to transfer euros to Monte dei P. If a charge is made at this end they will pay it. Recently I read on this Forum that we could bank almost for free (there is a small Gov tax that must be paid each year), with the San Paolo bank which has joined a group of other banks and if you do not actually go into the Bank, charges are not made. The ATM machines of this group have yet to link up but we intend to change asap. Search for details on the Forum or someone out there find the info please. Apart from that Barclays Bank are keen to have your business and are advertising on Italian Tv saying so. I will search for the details a friend sent last week and send another post. We sincerely thank the person who gave us the tip on this site re San P..

Here's the info re Barclays.
Barclays Bank Milan rang my friend in London. Following her visit to Dolce Vita Exh.

1. No euro cashpoint in UK
2. Account charge E9 per month
3. No charge for direct debits
4. Branch in Florence, Milan , Rome but not Perugia yet - suggested this to them
5. Free transfers from UK when holding Barclays UK account
6. Receive 2 cards debit and credit
7. Cash withdrawals (first 50) free thereafter E2 charge in a year ??
8. Don't need specific amount to open account

Subject: Opening a Barclays Bank account in Italy

Dear Mrs B....,
With regards to opening an Italian current account, we prefer people to go to one of our international branches in Italy to open the account. However if you are not able to go to Italy it is possible to open one from the UK.

You have to fax our international branch in Milan a copy of your passport, codice fiscale and proof of residence. Then you have to arrange an appointment with a Barclays branch and send our Italian branch that UK branch's details : tel and fax n°, name of branch manager. We then contact the branch explaining that they have to identify and validate the client. On the appointed day, the client goes to the UK branch, our Italian branch faxes through the application form which the client has to sign in front of the Barclays employee. The UK branch then faxes the form back to Italy who finish off the paperwork. It is important that this is all done on the same day. The original signed application form then has to be posted to our Italian branch.

At the moment we only have application forms in Italian. The English ones should be ready next month.

The Italian relationship manager who opens the account is called Marco Cecchetti, tel no. 0039.02.6378661 ; fax 0039.02.63786629 ; email: marco.cecchetti@barclays.it. (I am copying Marco on this email.)

The signed originals then have to be posted to him at Barclays Bank PLC, Via Turati 3, 20121 Milano (MI), Italy.

If you are already a Barclays UK customer, we have a fee-free service which enables you to send money from the UK account to your Italian account. For more info. on this you can check out our website www.barclays.com/buying abroad. Or call 0845 045 2822.

Please contact Marco who will help you through the process.

Regards

We opened a bank account originally w/ Monte dei Paschi di Siena, and were horrified by the charges (after a year of doing large transfers, property purchases, etc.) -- however, when I went to my local branch in Puglia to close the account, having opened an account with ingdirect.it (formerly Barings Bank, now ING Orange), I was offered a MUCH better package of quite lower charges from MPS -- and, as I only use ATM machines to access my ingdirect.it money, or a US bank account, it has worked out very well. Don't be afraid to really bargain hard with the bankers locally -- they will do quite a bit to keep the $$ in the house, particularly if you have a history of large balances -- NB, I speak Italian, it undoubtedly helped!
