9005 TV LIcence

I have recently purchased a tv for my apartment in Italy. Do I need a tv Licence?

You certainly do if you do not want to be fined. Look under General Chat about Italy, the thread is called "What is a TV?"

We bought a TV last year, paid cash, no one in the shop asked for our name and address. How will the TV licensing people know? (Incidentally, we don't watch TV on it, only DVDs. Don't even have a TV connection...)

We brought our T.V's from UK and only watched DVD's for several months but we still received through the post a demand for license fee. (Since paying for license now watch TV).
Spotted our first TV detector van a couple of weeks ago!!

From personal experience I think thay take a similar view to the UK authorities by assuming that every address has a TV. I had a visit, but unlike the UK when I told them I didn't have a TV they just accepted it and didn't ask to come inside. No stream of objectionable letters either!

I think in part this is true - we were also told that residency is the key - i.e once you have residency they tend to assume you have a TV and will automatically issue a licence fee demand. So, if you do not have residency they are unlikely to chase you. No idea how true this is - have residency and a licence so have never tested the thoery!

Have had a few letters from Rai re TV licence, all addressed to me at a different address in a different village - but good ole Poste Italia must know everyone for miles around, and with an english name we must stick out a bit, so they have arrived on the doormat without problem.

Sent the last one back to say I don;t have a TV - which I don;t but now they want me to sign to say I don't have a TV, PC, Laptop, DVD player, and I do have a laptop. So will have to buy one - not sure what the penalty for not it, but don;t want to find out either!

Any one know how I buy a TV licence?

We have had the same issue. We dont have a TV etc but once we got residency we started getting demands from RAI. We have told them many times we dont have a TV but they are still asking for the money. Expect we will get a visit at some point.

As regards how to pay, every letter we have received from RAI has been accompanied by a payment slip with the amount etc - a bit like a bank giro credit form in the UK. To pay it I presume you fill it in and take it down to the the Post Office with the money.

Maybe it is different down here in the deep south, we have had residency for a while and have never received any demands or anything else in connection with a tv licence. We did ask another couple (anglo-italian) and they advised us not to bother! We have tv and sky italia so we must be visible somewhere. How much is a tv licence anyway and how do you go about getting one?

If in doubt you probably do need a licence and if you want to sort it out quickly go down to the PO and pay , if asked your TV was a gift. Also you can pay at lotto offices and tobacconists and they are often more helpful than the POs

Hi Guys
Follow the above link for all you need to know......cheers

For the last 2 years I have paid online using a UK credit card. As we do not go to Italy during the winter months we always paid late and incurred a penalty but now the problem is solved as I can pay from the UK. I paid on the www.taxtel.it site. It was 106 Euros and a 1.90 Euro charge. You need your licence number and codice of control which are on the letters from SAT(Sportello Abbonamenti TV). You can print out your receipt but they send you one anyway. I hope this helps.

The licence fee is due by 31 January - it is a set date for everyone. This year it was E106 - if you pay late there is a fine automatically added on, the later you pay the higher the fine. As it is due in Jan, we received the demand the Jan after we got residency - it is sent out from Torino. I had tried to pay before we got the demand - the ladies in the PO thought this was hilarious and told me to come back only when I had received the paperwork from Torino as there is some personal number they need in order process the payment.
So if you have not received the paperwork I would not worry too much as presumably your payment would not get processed without the vital number!

Funnily enough I received my demand yesterday. Haven't opened it yet, so I don't know how I let them know that I haven't got a TV. In the UK I got fed up telling the licencing authorities and eventually just binned them.

Television set use only as a computer monitor or for viewing videocassettes or satellite television items.

Mandatory payment of television subscription fees in compliance with the provisos of Article 1 of Royal Decree 246 of February 21 1938 comes from the ownership of one or more pieces of equipment suitable or adaptable to receiving radio-television transmissions, regardless of use quality or quantity as specified by Italian High Court Rulings 535 of May 12 1988 and 284 of June 26 2002, and Court of Cassation Ruling 8549 of August 3 1993. Assignment of a television set to other uses, such as pre-recorded tape viewing, home-computer terminal or video-game monitor not exclusive of adaptability to receiving television broadcasts does not therefore exonerate from mandatory subscription fee payment.

Fee payment is also due by holders of a satellite or ground digital television set subscription, even in the event of using such equipment for receiving cable or foreign origin broadcasts.

I wonder how long it will take them to add lap tops and standard monitors, with web TV access................

as far as i`m concerned they sould pay you for having a tv.what do they spend the licence fee on? they cirtainly don`t spend much on making programs, exept for game shows (from which i learned the word GUILLOTINE,havn`t had to use it yet,the word i mean) we rent an appartment but have residency so don`t know if the owner has a licence or not.if we have to buy a licence i`m afraid the tv will have to go and we`ll spend the 106 euro`s on wine in the local bar where they have a tv.

You'd miss hearing about how wonderful Berlusconi is then, though! It's worth it just to watch Fido at work on Rete4 - possibly...
