9024 Autogrill's expansion

I read today that BAA has sold the World Duty Free shops to Autogrill for £546.6m ($1.10bn). It seems that BAA's owner Ferrovial is trying to dump its non-core sales areas to help pay off the debt it took on to buy BAA.........look, I never said it was interesting, just true(!)

Well that's a bit of a turnaround. All the British commentators at the time said Ferrovial just wanted the airports for the shopping malls. Seems they maybe want to run airports, the dumbos.
(Someone else who has brought a management consultant in, perhaps!)

does this mean we'll be able to get decent coffee and grub for under a fiver at the airport in future? Well, I can dream.

I would not say that they are dumbos.... See who they really are, not just Autogrill:

Eh you do Pigro at Stansted.

Err - both Tuscan & Charles namechecked Ferrovial as the parent company & the "dumbo" comment was, I think, somewhat "lengua en la boca", aimed not at the company but at the press analysis of their takeover of BAA? Respect nonetheless for sticking up for the Spanish.

Can't say I've noticed Stansted having any better value for money food wise than any other BAA places. Granted they're all much better in terms of quality/variery than they used to be ... but given my choice of where to spend my fiver, I'd still go to Autogrill.

I find food at Stanstead and the UK quite good, I would even say excellent in some places. Well, I am 1/8 British by ancestry (my husband is 1/4), and we have kept some traditions alive...; however, coffee is a big problem. I am a coffeaholic and I drink excellents cups both in Italy and in Spain (at least in my area), but the one in the UK is usually terrible (although there is a place at Stanstead with an Italian name which is not that bad..... Consequently, when I am in the UK I drink tea all the time, which is excellent in every sense of the word.... with the added bonus of not getting the usual question "You are not feeling well today, are you?" which you get in Spain where it is considered almost a medicine..... and where it tastes like one. Yuk!

Gala next time at Stansted try Pret A Manger. The coffee and food is organic and I find it very good. I always buy a Brie, Tomato and Basil Baguette there for the journey and have a decaffeinated cappuccino prior. The prices are similar to that I pay for the same in central London.

Another good airport bar/ristorante is the one at Frankfurt Hahn. It has an italian name, but oops I have forgotten it .....

in the bars I frequent in spain, when someone has a cup of tea, they usually put a generous shot of whisky/brandy/aguardiente in it :-)

Strange people the Spaniards ..... Just joking Gala!!!

That is called "strong medicine". They do it also with coffee.....

And not content with that whopping sum, I have just heard on the news that they, greedy so and sos, are proposing to increase the £10 fee passengers currently pay, to £13. BBC NEWS | Business | BAA to raise airport landing fees Yes I know I said the increase was £3. Take it up with BBC World At One.

I like the fact that here in Italy, coffee with a shot of grappa in it is called a "corrected" coffee.

Nardini so if I wanted to order it what is the word in Italian???

Come to think of it here in the UK, it's not that unusual to add a wee dram of whatever to give tea or coffee an extra buzz to fortify one's self. (Thirtyfy would be better!!! lol)
That's cafe corretto
Close enough - actually it's a "caffè corretto"...

It seems to be my day to be a pedant today - sorry about that! :winki:

No worries,
I stand to be corrected (Ho-ho)
