Thanks for reminding me to check. I don't normally fly (or use Ryanair) but I'm nipping back for Mum's 80th next week. I'll have to go and check the dimensions they allow.
Edit: a reminder "Strictly one item of cabin baggage per passenger (excluding infants) weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm is permitted. (handbag, briefcase, laptops, duty free etc must be carried within your permitted 1 piece of cabin baggage). Cabin baggage must contain no prohibited items click here for details)."
Just to say we flew back to the UK from Bergamo on Monday and Ryanair had installed a machine at security to check both the dimensions and weight of the hand luggage.QUOTE]
Thanks for that - is it similar to the frame the case normally has to fit into? We're flying in & out of Bergamo for the first time at the end of the month. Usually go to Pisa.
Sue - perhaps you could update us when you return, please? Enjoy the party!

Yes -it's exactly the same frame as they normally have by the check-in etc,but also with scales on the bottom. They didn't seem to mind if you had to squeeze it in a touch as long as it eventually fitted and was within the 10kg weight limit

Although primarily aimed at skiers, at the end of the article there is quite a useful summary of baggage allowances and costs for various airlines many of which fly to Italy.

This has been mentioned in the past...although it looks ghastly, you can of course put all your stuff weighing no more that the handbaggage allowance, into a black dustbin bag which will fit what ever shape or size is required by the airline's "measuring" equipment. There is nothing to say that you can't!

Somewhat stronger and less vulnerable to puncture than a bin bag but just as practical is one of those woven plastic shopping bags that you can pick up for under a euro in many supermarkets, especially the likes of Lidl or Eurospin. The measurements are within the airlines requirements and they weigh nothing when empty, unlike many of those little wheelie cases, some of which weigh about 3kgs when empty!!!!!

I went with Ryanair, Brindisi to Stansted last night - no sign of any such device. Just the usual - your bag must fit comfortably in this "box"! Nothing was checked, all very relaxed. Bet it is not the same when I fly back from Stansted!!

I'm feeling a bit confused. I've just printed out on-line check in for the first time and recieved
boarding cards for the return journey as well, even though we dont return until the 14th Oct. I thought you could only check in from 5 days before. Will they still be valid then? Is this normal to be able to do this?

Has anyone flown from Bergamo recently? Just wondering if you are allowed a handbag/laptop/camera etc. in addition to the 10k hand luggage or does everything have to go in the case, which has to fit in the new machine which checks weight and size?
Normally, flying from Pisa, they're not bothered about extra bags and it's all a bit of a nonsense, because as soon as you go airside you can buy anything in the duty free area!
Thanks in advance for any info.

We flew from Bergamo with Ryanair at the beginning of the month and had everything in one bag each. They were weighed as we went through and came in just over 10K each but were waved through.
Not sure just how strict they would be about the one bag rule as we complied (although all of our pockets were bulging with heavier bits and pieces in order to keep the weight of the bags down).

The rules haven't changed Romano. One bag only cabin allowance. Word of warning for those traveling from Stansted. At the security entrance they not only ask you to test fit your bag into the frame but you have to have the handles on top ie you cannot turn it sideways, They also weigh it.

Whilst I probably won't be thanked for this, I really wish Ryanair & all Airport check-ins would enforce this rule consistantly.
I flew back from Pescara on Tuesday and the flight was delayed in taking off due to the cabin crew being unable to accomodate about 4 or 5 oversized pieces of cabin baggage that had been allowed through. Eventually, they were taken off the plane and put in the hold, presumably at no additional cost.
This is grossly unfair on those whom have abided by the rules and paid a tidy sum for the "privelege, as well as being particularly aggravating for those passengers (like me) carrying a small bag of the right dimensions and weight, having to watch the circus of trying to fit all this oversized baggage on board.
Those who try it on and get away with it, may well feel chuffed with themselves for getting one over on Ryanair, but spare a thought for other passengers please.
By the way, I have always been in praise of Ryanair. They make no bones about no frills and expecting more for your money when paying less than £50 for a round trip to virtually anywhere in Europe, is just not logical. Sure it's cattle class, but for a 2 hour journey on a plane for £25 or less, can anyone really say they are right to run Ryanair down.
It seems to me that some would take great delight in seeing Ryanair go bust, which is unlikley. I for one, wouldn't be one of them.

Actually, I'm trying to abide by the rules, but don't want to get caught out by the inconsistency of those applying them.
Ryanair offer a great budget alternative and long may they last, but the issue over hand luggage only, is likely to unravel as more people take that option, because there isn't physically enough locker space in the cabin, regardless of the fact that some people "get away with" oversized cases.

Easy to do - follow the rules whether they are enforced or not - then you will be OK

You can now check in 14 days before your flight, and if your return flight falls within the 14day period when you check in for the outbound flight you can if you choose get boarding passes for both out and in bound flights.
It says this somewhere on the Ryanair site, although it still mentions the original 5 day limit somewhere too.

I have just flown East Midlands to Rome Ciampino with Ryanair and with an 85 year old aunt who needed help with a wheelchair. Couldn't fault the treatment we had except the return flight was 6 hours late!
I booked both ways for me on line as I only had hand baggage (as did my husband). Aunty had to be booked in normally. She had a suitcase which was under the allocated weight. I offered my cabin case, weighed in on my bathroom scales to just over 9kgs and was told it didn't need weighing, just go straight through to security. Same applied on the return journey. No measuring or weighing.
Must depend upon the airport. Just because I had an aunt in a wheelchair didn't make them more lenient on me as my husband was told the same and he was separated from me at both airports.
Dreaded going on Ryanair as this was my first flight with them and yet their staff were very courteous and helpful. We got great seats, loads of space because of my aunt and her bad leg.

We all passed the check but have become quite accustomed to seeing hand luggage which is clearly in excess of the allowance. So just a warning to be careful in case anyone runs into this at Bergamo or other Italian airports ( there was nothing on the flight out of Stansted -so this was all at the Italian end)
Thanks for the warning.
Have to say I am not surprised - so many passengers carry bags that are clearly outside the weight and size restrictions, more so since R'air started charging for airport check in and hold baggage.
