10847 Tv Inglese

When I left UK 4 yrs ago we had no tv for the first 6 months and I loved it, but having 3 kids I was overuled when we moved into the new house, so gave in and bought one, but banned all soap operas.
Recently one of my kids has sneaked them back into the daily viewing, I did not realise how often he was watching them until this lunchtime when my Italian boyfriend asked me- is coranation street on today? god help me!

It depends how old your kids are. You can make rules re what they can watch but kids inevitably will break them. Both our son and our daughter in law have "prestigious" professional careers that require a high academic track record, she has a phd. Both of them were glued to soaps as teenagers and it did them no harm at all.

Where are you and how do you get "coronation street"?
We have Sky Italia but don't watch it very much, not enough to justfy 41 euros a month anyway. We mainly kept it for Eurosport so OH could watch moto gp. But now moto gp is not broadcast on Eurosport anymore we are thinking of switching to a BBC Prime smart card, which is a lot cheaper, and I believe will give us BBC Prime (Eastenders, Spooks, New Tricks etc. although an awful lot of repeats) and Sky News.

Does anybody in Puglia have a BBC Prime Smart Card - if so what size dish and is it working okay

we have the basic sky option and a child... what is often regarded as inappropriate television he loves... however he also loves some of the old comedy series on the bbc prime channel.. and has become a dr who addict in the last year since they were on.... who can complain about that...... will watch most programmes either in Italian or English or often for some strange reason in English with Italian sub titles....

what i reason is that he does Italian school full time...only Italian friends... so its a good way of keeping current with both American and English current spoken language... weather that's good or bad i really am not sure... but at least when he takes his annual trip to the UK... he sounds like a normal UK citizen... i envy his ease of switching between Italian and English with the appropriate accents which make him indiscernible from a local... he can even talk in English with an Italian accent...

maybe doesnt answer any questions as regards costs... but to my mind the sky basic package allows a good spread of programming.. in Italian and English and i am quite taken now with the channel 400 set... sort of discovery and rai edu type programming...

finally to establish some factual reason for this post regarding moto gp... italia uno on mediaset carries the whole moto gp season and the super-bike season is shown on channel seven... so no need to pay to watch these here in any case...

Eastenders is the only thing she now regularly watches. We are thinking of setting up a Slingbox in the UK for her, as she does miss Coronation Street. The dish is just the regular one that came with the Italian free to air satellite gear.

What does the Mediasetcard give you - and how much does it cost?
Tnx

I find English with Italian subtitles or vice versa a good way of picking up language .... especially colloquial expressions

Thanks, will let OH know

Tnx[/quote]It works with digital terrestrial, and you get Joi, Mya, Steel and the Disney Channel. Joi, Mya and Steel show many films in English, but most of the Disney Channel is in Italian. It costs about 10 Euros a month from memory. They also do some pay per view stuff I think, but we haven't looked into that yet.

BBC Prime works out at about £5 per month, and was great for the first year, but now there is so much stuff that is being repeated ad infinitum that mum gets very frustrated by it.

I agree about the repeats on Prime - very frustrating ...... Bob has complained to Prime and got a standard response, we are working on our 2009 schedule and your comments have been passed to our planners, or some such

I need Prime for EastEnders but don't want to pay 40 euros a month when that's all we really watch, everything else that looks interesting on the schedule is invariably a repeat. If the Prime Smart card works out at £5 a month we will probably get one, even if it is only for EastEnders and Sky News. Bob can watch moto gp on Italian tv as pointed out earlier in this thread.

We've bought a load of TV series on DVDs and watch those when we are in the mood to settle down in front of TV - at least we can watch them when we feel like it without having to remember to tape them!

The first year it costs more, £90 from memory, supposedly the cost of supplying the card. After than it is about £60 a year, taken by direct debit annually. I don't think you get Sky News with BBC Prime.

Totally agree with the comments about BBC Prime and repeats. In fact I've had Sky Italia for 2 years and at least half of the stuff that's on all the channels has been on a number of times before.

We are now getting rid of Sky Italia because we were pretty annoyed at their attitude. They phoned one afternoon and told me that Sky Sport was free for 2 months. I said okay thanks and that was it - grand total of the conversation. It was free for 2 months but they then added it to our package and made us pay for it. We phoned to take it off once we realised we were paying for it and they point blank refused. We then decided to get rid of Sky altogether but on phoning were told that you can only cancel your subscription at the end of your subscription year and only in writing (in spite of the fact that they seem to be able to add things on whenever they like on the basis of a phone call). Just to clarify, we were into our second year of subscription so it wasn't a minimum subscription rule - you can only cancel your subscription once a year ie on the anniversary of when you first signed up. Our subscription finally ended the other day but in the run up to this my partner has had numerous text messages - at least 1 or 2 a day, messages on our Sky box and phone calls all trying to entice us to back to Sky. The latest offer was to refund all the extra we paid for Sky Sport and reduce our subscription from around 50 euro a month to 27 euro for 9 months. Moral of the story is is that if you have Sky Italia tell them you're going to cancel and then hold out to the last minute and you should hopefully have been offered a reduced rate.

We have still resisted however - they just ****** us off too much!
