10894 I need a genius to figure this one out!

Thank you all for the advice so far about trying to insure my new car.
But...as I live in Ireland, Collins & Co wont quote me even though the car is a UK car. They say that I have to be living in the UK for them to insure me. And mainland UK too...the last time I looked, the Union Jack was still flying in the 6 counties, but Collins & Co won't insure cars in the North of Ireland.

Italsure have not called me back yet.

In short, Irish resident buys Northern Irish car, to drive it to Italy for 8 months, without bringing it to the south of Ireland at all. Nothing dodgy - it's just the route I am going once I collect the car. Any ideas?

Hi Ronan
Have you thought about long term rental ?......car/roadtax/insurance all sorted .

Ronan

Have you tried one of he Irish banks I am from the north and most up there do stuff that works accross the border. I have a funny feeling they have to, as some of the population have been expressing a ongoing interest in not being british!!

Most UK insurers won't provide car insurance from UK to NI due to high premiums during the olden days!!

Try the bank of Ireland or ulster bank. Or find a NI insurance broker who may be able to help!

I got my residency in Italy and bought a real old banger of a Fiat and insured it with Direct Line.it Totol cost €1500, had it 3 years just passed it MOT thingy!!

good luck

All understood Ronan ......cheers

Maybe try a broker based in Newry or Armagh, who might be familiar with cross-border issues?

Or theoretically move in with a friend this side of the border for a month.

I spoke to 2 brokers in the North and neither want to know about it unless I have a N.Ireland address. I joked with one of them that if I bought a house, could they then insure me. the answer was that they do house insurance as well!! I'm stuck.......
