I would agree with Sebastiano.

I would agree with Sebasiano and Gala. Surely it is irrelevant as to who the dog attacked, it could be a hunter or any other visitor, friend or foe, wanted or unwanted!

We have insurance for our dogs, they are both as soft as butter but you never know. We also have warning signs up. Telling visitors to beware of the dog
What if the situation were reversed and some lousy shot managed to kill your dog on your land? Would they be prosecuted and would you be entitled to compensation?

Yes of course you are protected.
If a hunter accidently or intention shot your dog or dogs he would be completely at fault which is why all hunters here in Italy have extensive insurance. In fact the number one reason to remove someones licence is not having insurance. Even not carrying your insurance document with you when you are hunting is enough to have either your licence removed or a very very very heavy fine.
So dont worry you'd be very well compensated!!!!!!
Might even pay for a new car..

I wonder it that is ever abused - you know - 'old dog on last legs - need new car' syndrome

Well with the amount of insurance I have to pay for hunting I'm sure your compensation would equal a new BMW or Audi well worth putting Old Yellow out of his misery!!!!

Sweetie, I already drive a Porsche and none of my dogs have ever been yellow.
There have been many comments recently about the right for hunters to walk over your land in the pursuit of their favorite sport.
If you have a guard dog to protect your property and a hunter enters the property area, even if it is not fenced off, the dog attacks and maims or even worse kills the hunter, then is the dog in the wrong or the hunter who thinks that the whole of the land is his actual domain??
unfortunately it is the land/dog owner who then is faced with judicial problems and would be charged with manslaughter and the dog put down.
