8567 Animal rescue

As some of you will know, I am setting up a pet adoption web site (see this post) and I have decided that instead of running two domains .com/.co.uk etc and .it I am going to use a .eu address domain. I would be pleased if you could vote on a site name. The name winning the most votes after a week will be used as the sites address and title. In the meantime, if you are someone who rescues animals off the streets and have an animal that you would like to put up for adoption or you are looking to adopt a rescued animal please PM me. I would also welcome any ides from the members for additional content on the site. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the previous members who have already offered their support.

General chat about Italy

It is a very commendable idea, and I am sure that the Italy Magazine forums are an excellent place to publicise ways to help animals in need; but perhaps it would be useful for you to liaise with the existing organisation (AISPA).

Welcome to the Anglo-Italian Society for the Protection of Animals

As with all such charitable organisations, a local presence depends upon committed volunteers, and AISPA is well represented (and quite amazingly successful in fundraising) in the Arezzo/Umbria area, and also in Rome. I am sure that an 'affiliate' in other regions would be most welcome.

Good luck with your good idea.

I got my abandoned dog from an >ENPA< dog pound in Sondrio. They are a national volontary charitable group and are funded by donations only. My local group has finally, after many years, been able to build a new kennel block and a small office. Before this they were in a small caravan and the dogs in almost totally unprotected cages in tiny kennels. They pride themselves on never putting a dog down unless on veterinary advice.

I really do applaud your initiative and do wish you all the best. There can never be enough help for unwanted or mistreated animals anywhere...

Congratulations! Our dear dog "Tequila" was adopted by us from the AAA refuge in Marbella (Spain). They do a wonderful job and they manage to find new homes for their dogs and cats in other EU countries, mainly Germany.
Best wishes with your project and keep us informed.

Hello, I have just become a member after googling 'dog rescue in Italy' and been connected Italy Magazine.
I have just moved to Bagni di Lucca and am renting in the town while I look for a property to buy.
Unfortunately I have had to leave my dog back in England until I have suitable accommodation but I have apassion about dogs and hope to be able to adopt a few rescue dogs when I am settled.
If you think we may have something in common, would love to hear from you.
Ciao Gill

Hi Gill welcome to the forum, we have active members in your area, sure they can give advice, and as I have said to a recent newcomer, how about joining our pets corner in the groups section.

Hi Gill and welcome to the Forum. We have a house in Bagni di Lucca but we do not live there permanently. If you have any questions, just send me a Private Message through the Forum. I'll be glad to help. Best wishes with your projects.

I've been looking for a dog to rescue and instead 2 cats moved in 2 months ago! Well we're keeping them anyway after finding a local charity that paid for their sterilization. It's a mummy and kitten. The mummy came back today from the vets and seems happy to be with us again. Good luck with the project.

Hi 'Aria', I think you will find a few like minded individuals on the forum. Before the New Year we had a bit of a frenzy in finding homes for puppies and I also posted with a story, because I was trying to find a home for an injured abandoned dog. You will be pleased that all the animals found homes and there are some threads and a forum group following their stories.

I must admit I never updated my story because we so fell in love with the little dog we found (we already had two cats and two dogs) that he is still with us (I nearly contacted you, Heiko, because I read on Sully's post that you would take on a pup and you live quite close!!!!!). Good luck with the kitties.

I am delighted, Gill, that you intend to adopt a dog or two!! Believe me, it's very much needed here in Italy. Any help and advice, needed keep in touch.

Hi Persephone
Thanks for the reply. I am new to forums and chat sites so did not know what to expect when I joined! Dogs will always lead to conversations though, so hear I am. When I know how to, I will post a picture of my 11 year old cross breed, Henry, who is being looked after in the UK while I try to find a house here. I miss him terribly, but this rented 3rd floor flat is not suitable for a dog.
I have spent the last 2 years looking for the right property in Tuscany, but decided that I was getting nowhere and I was spending too much time with Ryanair!
Now is a terrible time to buy with exchange rate so bad for the £, so if anyone out there knows of a house with garden that I can rent for a year or two, do let me know. Of course, dogs must be welcome! I cannot wait to have four legged friends around me again.
I have been told that there is a rescue centre in Diecimo and 2 in Lucca. Does anyone know them?
Ciao Gill

Hi Gill, here you have some information about the rescue centre in Diecimo (Borgo a Mozzano)
Canile di Diecimo - adotta un ospite - Progetto PiccoleCucce, Borgo a Mozzano (LU), ci occupiamo di piccoli abbandonati, di tutela degli animali, di promozione ed educazione
Good luck with your house hunting.

Hello and many thanks for that address.
I have been on their web site and would have immediately rushed over there if - a. I had a garden and b. a car! As I have only been here a month I am dependant on buses and trains.
Looking forward to finding my way around this forum and posting chats.

Hi Aria
We live just outside Bagni, and unfortunately there are no Rescue centres within the immediate area. We have 2 Golden Labs over here( Lucky Us ) and use a Local Vet who may be able to help you with adopting a puupy/dog. But beware it can be expensive with Vet fees and the like.
If your interested send me a PM.
Good luck with your search for a house; we know a good agent in Bagni if your interested.

Hello and thanks for the reply.
Actually, you have brought up a subject that I had not considered. Vet fees!
Back in the UK I had pet insurance which paid out huge sums of money when Henry had to have an operation on his spine and later a course of Chemotherapy for a carcinoma. Poor dog, he has come through so much, now he is there and I am here!
So do I gather that insurance is not available in Italy?
Whoops, he would not be around today if it had not been available.
Ciao Gill

Sorry, forgot, yes please the name of the agent in Bagni di lucca. Gill

Help. What is a PM? No not Gordon.
Sorry, forgot, yes please the name of the agent in Bagni di lucca. Gill
Hi Aria
PM is personal message, as people don't need to know the ins and outs of a conversation/thread just between 2 people and also you can be accused of promoting services etc. So a PM is just between the 2 of you. I'll send you the details by that.
Re insurance, as your dog is over 10 then you would not be able to get it insured any way; but the vet we use does house visits and is very very reasonable, and in my opinion better that any Vet we used in the UK.

Hi, nice to know you are on line. Would like to talk PM when you tell me how! What on earth is "sorry no stinking bishop"? Sorry, new to all this! Giil/Aria. The latter because I am an opera Fan.

Stinking Bishop is Wallaces' favourite Cheese. Just getting it in before the Wags.(No reference to Dogs)
I have sent you a PM

Gill, you might find it useful to start a new 'thread' for finding yourself somewhere to rent. The 'animal rescue' thread may not be the best place to get seen by all the people who can help.
