53 Italian Tv in the UK

Does anyone know how you can get Italian channels in the UK. OK I know for some people that may sound a rather strange questions considering the "supposed" standard of italian TV - but we have been trying to learn the language for eons and being able to watch some TV especially the quiz shows {which we actually quite like} would be most helpful in this cause {if anything can be helpful}

I tried Sky Channel 820 which was advertized in a magzine some while back but it is not availabe as part of the standard Sky package. I already have one dish and do not want to have to put up another - no objections to ditching Sky providing i can still get Eurosport GB for the italian Football

Any one with ideas post away

We are able to receive Rai 1,2 & 3 here in Manchester by using a satellite dish aimed at the Hot bird satellite which unfortunately is not the same direction as the Sky satellite we also bought a second-hand analogue receiver which it plugs into.

we did the same as susi....in devon used to watch the rai channels....we had it all instaled by a local company....had a pace box with no subscription card and a normal dish...they point it the right way....if they need help...then buy one of those satellite magasines with all the directions and listings in and away it went.....best way to learn apart from being here.....and it also allows you to see an italian perspective on life here..... whilst learning to get your ear tuned in to rapid italian talk...pictures and words are the best way of learning and dubbed films that you may well have seen in english before allow you to learn much more easily.... we paid in all 200 pounds which was from nothing and it was a very good investment to make...

We have a sack load of DVD's that can viewed in Italian/Italian with subtitles etc - but it drives me mad when the subtitles say something differnt to the spoken words

Really? What DVDs have you got? We've only just recently got a DVD player for this very purpose but I haven't really started to amass DVDs to watch on it. Where do you buy yours from?

Some we have purchased from Italy other sin the UK - there are loads of titles available with both English and dubbed Italian and with Italian subtitles - from Elvis to Shrek

But as I say the problem is that the subtitles never match the words spoken - so if you try to watch in Italian use the subtitles to pick up the words you miss you end up getting more confused

We buy DVD's in Italy as they all seem to come in English and Italian unlike those on sale here. they are cheaper too.

I was chatting to an Italian gentleman last summer who asid he paid a local firm £250 and he gets over 80 Italian channels for no monthly subscription. Not sure if it's legal, mind you (I'm sure it is!)!

I can make enquiries, if you're interested

Tich

I would be very intrested - please could you post up details or PM me

Thanks

Can anyone tell me the best way to subscribe to an Italian TV guide? In particular I would like to get Sorrisi e Canzoni. The nearest newsagent which stocks it is over 30 miles away.

Thanks.

If anyone is looking for a quick way to source Italian language DVD's in the UK there are two ways: either you can look on ebay (www.ebay.co.uk) or at www.play.com

Ebay is useful for getting Italian langauge films that aren't generally available here (e.g. Il Ciclone etc) but it's a bit pot-luck.

Play is a good bet. Just go to the site and on the left hand side drop down menu (under 'search' ) select the language option, then just type in Italian. At present well over 1000 come up. I stumbled across it by accident when I was looking for a present for my Italian brother-in-law....now every christmas is easy!

Forza Cagliari! :D

The Italian Bookshop in London have also got DVDs although their website is a bit cumbersome to navigate. Deliveries are usually pretty quick.

Don't you find them a bit expensive? I bought the video 'La Vita e Bella' when I was last in London for £17 and found the same tape in Dublin for less in Euro.

£17 for a VHS film does seem a bit over the top. I've only bought DVDs and although they aren't particularly cheap either, I have managed to find titles that nobody else seem to carry e.g. made for tv films. If anyone knows of any other company who sells Italian tv programmes/films on DVDs, please share the info.

Thanks.

.....Blockbuster have an on-line service (www.BlockBuster.co.uk) that allows you to identify films & have them posted to your home. You are able to hold on for them for as long a you want and then just pop them in the post back to them.

It is very simple and they have a foreign language section too.....(see the world cinema bit)

What's more, the first month's 'subscription' is free (£14 after that, but I cancelled my subscription after one month!)

It's very good!

Disaster!!! Rai have just announced that they are ceasing analogue transmission to the hot bird satellite next week!

What am I going to do? No more watching La prova del cuoco every morning.

If you have a fast internet connection you can use the free service RAI offers online with Rai Click http://www.raiclick.rai.it/

It is excellent because you can choose what you want to watch and when, you can watch a programme as many times as you want. This is great to imrpove your language skills.

Moreover, most of the trashy Italian programmes are not in there. well! some still are! But they have news, dramas, talk shows about politics, documentaries, comedies as well as some old and new variety shows.

Thanks Katia I will try that, let you know if it works. If you never seen La prova del cuoco it's the Italian version of Ready steady cook, I 've picked up some great cooking tips from them.
